The Gallup Independent reports on Navajo Reservation dormitory schools. The Ramah dormitory dining room for young girls and boys sits in the same building, within a short distance, in a desolate stone hall with poor lighting and worn flooring.
The report discusses heavy snow and bitter cold affecting elementary students at boarding schools. Students must walk unprotected from dormitories to dining halls, a hazardous trek in winter, though healthful in good weather. Continued on page seven.
Apollo 8 nears reentry as Frank Borman James Lovell and William Anders report rest after 10 lunar orbits. From Space Center Houston the crew says Earth looks larger and plans for a safe return while awaiting reentry and contact with radar.
Pamela Powers remains missing after Anthony Erthell Williams, a self proclaimed minister, turned himself in to Davenport police. Search teams across Grinnell and surrounding counties scour snow covered countryside for leads, finding bloodstained clothes and a mannequin bundle near the YMCA. Williams faced charges for abducting Pamela during a wrestling event, with authorities skeptical about finding her alive.
The Associated Press reports holiday traffic fatalities across the nation, with 197 deaths during a 30 hour period ending midnight Wednesday. Safety officials had projected 280 to 360 deaths, while one day totals top or near wartime records in several years.
A four year old Manuelito man is reported in satisfactory condition after a one vehicle crash at 5 30 p m yesterday on U S 66 four miles west of Gallup Wilson L Begay 24 lost control and ran off the highway into a rock wall A Raymond Benally 19 of Manuelito was treated at PHS Hospital and released Begay was cited for reckless driving Officer Robert Hodges investigated
Seven people died in six New Mexico traffic accidents on Christmas Day. Victims include Oscar Ramos Manez 19 Sunland Park Lauriano Romero 68 Belen Nelson Slaughter Jr. 46 and Mae 30 Clovis Frank Frost 77 Grady Tony Torres Baca 16 Las Cruces and Fred Walston 16 Albuquerque.
Greek police battled two Arab gunmen who opened fire on an El Al Boeing 707 at Athens Airport as it prepared for takeoff to Paris and New York. One Israeli passenger died. a stewardess was injured, and the terrorists were seized. The attackers, linked to the Liberation Palestine organization, claimed responsibility.
Gallup reports about two inches of snow with more expected as gusty winds and colder air move in. Zuni sees four to five inches with slick, snow-packed roads. Roads out of Gallup open but chains advised. flights canceled. busses on schedule early. Air Force Captain Dale Noyd, freed December 24 in nonincarcerated status, awaits Supreme Court review on whether military prisoners may be held without bail during appeal. The case stems from a March court martial for refusing to aid training a student pilot for Vietnam. Justice Douglas ordered release until the Court’s January 10 meeting.
