NCC students outline uranium cleanup near Tuba City
Navajo Community College Chemistry 130 students presented on the Rare Metals uranium tailings site six miles east of Tuba City as part of a final exam. Faculty urged informed civic participation while noting no immediate danger. long term exposure via radon or contaminated water is the concern. Tailings from 1955 to 1966 were stabilized in a 48 acre disposal cell, with a second phase this fall targeting groundwater cleanup. Contaminated water moves toward Moenkopi Wash at about 30 feet per year, about 10,000 feet from the disposal cell, with no wells currently in the flow path.
