New Mexico Democratic leaders left a Albuquerque summit noting no notable actions. They agreed to present a united front in selecting a state party chairman while facing post election unease and calls for cohesion.
A school bus brake lining locked the brakes this morning at the turn off to the D and Trailer Park on U S 66 West, prompting a call to the Gallupi Fire Department for assistance.
Firemen answered a reported car fire at 1014 West Wilson as a false alarm on Thursday afternoon with no damage or injuries reported.
Salt Lake City police announced five killings in five days linked to two men. Myron D. Lance 25 and Walter Bernard Kelbach 28, both of Salt Lake City and recently paroled, were charged with first degree murder robbery and grand larceny in the tavern shootings. A sock and blood stained knife were found in a car at a roadblock.
Trinidad Mora age 19 of 511 West Green and Fred Castillo 21 of 410 S Seventh were reported in good condition at St Marys Hospital after a one vehicle crash at 12 10 this morning. Police say Mora driven pickup hit an icy spot at Aztec and Burke and Mora lost control, overturning the vehicle. Mora was ticketed for speeding and reckless driving. Another passenger Michael Bustamante of 19611 West Hill was apparently uninjured.
Long range U S B52 bombers struck Viet Cong bunkers in War Zone C near Saigon before dawn and hit infiltrating North Vietnamese troops in the DMZ in the afternoon. Navy jets claimed two enemy planes shot down over the Gulf of Tonkin near the Long Beach. Australia plans to raise its Vietnam contingent to 6300. Prime Minister Ky urged continued bombing until peace talks begin.
Zuni voters will select four top staff offices for two year terms at the Zuni Community Hall from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. About 600 voters are expected. Incumbents are Governor Robert Lewis and Lieutenant Governor Kassa Appa, Head Teniente Nathaniel Nasheboo, and Teniente Bruce Padaskis. Opponents include Virgil Wyaco Conrad Laselly Pee Queatwike and Lowell Panekh. Election announced by Irvin Paguin of the nominating committee.
Eight youngsters killed and thirteen injured when tons of wet sand spilled from a tractor trailer onto a school bus carrying 30 children near Windsor Ontario. The wreck occurred as the trailer turned a corner and scraped the bus at an intersection. Police detain the driver Marcel Lesfrancois of Stoney Ont pending investigation. Rescue crews used torches and crowbars to free trapped victims and treat the shaken bus driver James Levy.
Ben Thomas Jr., 23, of Tohatchi, asks the district court for a writ prohibiting Justice of the Peace E. J. Dorris of Gamerco from handling traffic cases. Thomas, arrested Aug. 8 by State Policeman Al Lipetsky on charges including driving while intoxicated and reckless driving, claims U S 666 at Tohatchi lies on the Navajo reservation and seeks to challenge state jurisdiction.

A Santa Fe grand jury indicted four highway officials, a Farmington businessman and a Grant County legislator in a road project probe. Indictments allege misuse of public funds in airport paving, culvert and bridge work with $1,000 bonds and potential penalties up to 5,000 fine or 10 years in prison. Arraignments delayed pending grand jury completion with trial eyed for spring term beginning in March.

The Commerce Department approved a 1 million dollar grant and a 650 thousand dollar loan to the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority to extend an 18 inch water line from Farmington to Shiprock. The project will serve 500 additional Indian families and support Shiprock’s development.
