Navajo Head Start workers to pay for background checks
Navajo Nation Head Start requires all employees and volunteers to submit fingerprint cards and pay a 22 dollar background check fee. Deadline is January 15 with potential disciplinary action for noncompliance. The policy covers cooks, drivers, teachers, and aides earning wages from seven to nine dollars per hour. Relatives say the move is unfair, especially near Christmas.

Jeremiah Tom 18 of Uprooted Tree Road south of Gallup received the New Mexico Municipal League Young Citizen Award on December 10 in Albuquerque for aiding Deputy Ron Saavedra after a September 2 1997 shootout. Tom approached the injured officer as the gunman later killed Robert Henry Jr. Tom risked danger to help Saavedra off the road and said he did not consider the danger at the time.
