Navajo Tribal Council to debate Head Start and Justice Dept

The Navajo Tribal Council holds a one day session on Wednesday to discuss three urgent items including the Head Start program disrupted by a power struggle between tribal administration officials and parents. A report on implementing the tribe's Justice Department and a revenue sharing plan are also on the agenda. The Head Start program seeks autonomy with its own bank account and computer system, while federal funding and a 1982 budget amendment for 574000 dollars are to be reviewed.

Fire destroys Wide Ruins trading post in Arizona

The abandoned Wide Ruins Trading Post in Wide Ruins burned to the ground at about 11 45 Friday night. Navajo police and BIA investigators investigated the blaze, which left a 22 room building unoccupied at the time. The post, vacated in June, was owned and operated by Bill and Sallie Lippincott from 1938 to 1950.

Candelaria Pueblo to be Listed on Historic Registers

The Candelaria Pueblo ruin near Grants will be listed on New Mexico's State Register and nominated for the National Register. The Archaeological Conservancy owns much of the site and holds it in trust until the National Park Service assumes responsibility.

Chee Dodge belt tops New York sale at Christie’s

A private American collector paid 25000 for a Zuni silver and turquoise condo belt once owned by Henry Chee Dodge at Christie's two day Indian art sale in New York. The belt, dated about 1925 and 46 inches long, spearheaded a 250000 total. Other notable sales included a Navajo rug for 10000 from Round Rock and two Robert Chee watercolors bought by a Colorado dealer.
