The Gallup Independent surveys Navajo dormitory schooling on the reservation. A nine month period in BIA dormitories forces English use, eroding Navajo language as children leave home at age six. Staffing gaps, funding limits, and a high turnover challenge supervision.
McKinley County commissioners heard that hospital progress remains slow though equipment delays ease for floors two and three. A low bid of 3743.50 for a self propelled scraper was approved for road use while two sheriff cars bids were tabled for bid-spec compliance and a Thoreau fire truck bid was under review.

Principal Cleveland Miller echoed the message noting even non Navajos can adopt Navajo strengths to be better Americans, while Nakai warned against discarding valued old beliefs.

Joe Torrez 63 of Gallup has died at home. A rosary is planned tonight at 8 p.m. at 81012 West Loge followed by a Mass Saturday at 9 a.m. in Sacred Heart Cathedral. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. He leaves seven daughters, three sons, two sisters and 21 grandchildren. Pallbearers include Ernest Garcia Jose Sanchez Lorenzo Lavate Tom Sandoval John Torrez and Dordio Torrez.
A 500000 grant will rebuild 5.9 miles of U S 666 from the McKinley San Juan line to improve road and bridge safety within the Navajo reservation. The New Mexico State Highway Department will oversee the reconstruction funded by transportation. The project serves Four Corners region needs including supplies, agriculture, and access to medical facilities.
Services for George D Ath ens 79 of Gallup New Mexico will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Rollie Mortuary with burial in Sunset Memorial Park. Born April 3 1889 in Fraquist a Gerece he was retired owner of the Liberty Cafe and a former AHEPA and Rotary Club member. He is survived by his widow Marie a son Joe Athens a brother Gus Athens two sisters Mrs George Georgoussis and Kaifas plus several grandchildren and nephews.
Rosary will be recited at 8 tonight at Rollie Mortuary for Juan Cabrera 68 of Lincoln who died Tuesday at Bataan Veterans Hospital. Mass Friday at 9 a.m. in St Francis Church followed by burial at Hillcrest. Cabrera a lifelong Galulo resident born March 8 1900 in Morelos Mexico was a retired coal miner. He leaves a son Juan Jr of South Gate Calif daughters Ester and several others including Mrs Vigil Fran co and Mrs Gutierrez. sister Mrs Sandoval. 23 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Pallbearers listed.
White Sands Missile Range technicians will track the Apollo 8 spacecraft as it passes New Mexico at 7:21 a.m. and 8:51 a.m. at an altitude of about 103 nautical miles. They will take positions nine hours before launch and stay on alert for three hours after Earth orbit ends and the mission heads to the moon.
In a special Inter Tribal Indian Ceremonial session last night State Representative-elect Pete Derizotis pledged full support to the Ceremonial legislative program. He said he would work to ensure the legislature supports the Ceremonial and would cooperate with directing bills to Congress in Santa Fe. Also present were Rep Louis Romero and Senator Tom Lee who offered support. Directors plan to mail members detailing needs and proposed bills for Congress. A further directors meeting is set for next week to consider the development committee's recommendation on contracting for Ceremonial architectural services.
A 15 year old Gallup girl drank a cup of clothing bleach around 4 p.m. yesterday after saying she was having problems with a boyfriend. She is in good condition at Public Health Service Indian Hospital. A companion alerted a neighbor who called for help and police. In a separate report John Kennedy reported his stereo record player worth 150 dollars stolen from his car by breaking the glass in the right door with a rock between 9 and 10 p.m. on Dec 14 in the Elk's Club parking lot.
The New York Times reports Sargent Shriver has accepted Nixon’s invitation to be the chief U.S. representative to the United Nations. Nixon is expected to announce the appointment soon with some Congress members ready for the news.
The Apollo 8 countdown stalled four hours due to a nonresponsive valve in the fueling system. Officials said the delay was manageable and did not threaten Saturday’s planned launch toward lunar orbit. The problem involved supercold hydrogen pumps and delayed fuel transfer, while other countdown steps remained ahead of schedule. The Elks Club initiates a ceremony on Saturday December 21 with the state president visiting.
