Many Want More Cibola Wilderness
A U S Forest Service report shows 65 percent of NM respondents favor wilderness designation for parts of the Cibola National Forest. The RARE II review considers about 32,300 acres in four sites north of Grants among 82 areas statewide. Local comments favored no wilderness by a large margin, but total NM responses were a minority of the national input.

Two Killed in Northwest New Mexico Highways
Gallup police report two fatal crashes Sunday in the northwest area. Leroy Hardy died after being hit on U.S. 666 north of Gallup by a pickup that fled the scene. Geraldine Rose Valley, 27, died when her car left State Road 124 near the McCarty overpass and rolled onto her, while passenger Gary Valley was injured. Albert Adair was hurt in a separate single-vehicle crash at the intersection of west U.S. 66 and Interstate 40. An electronic cash register was stolen from Evans Drug, and skis were taken from Ronald Gordon. Police arrested eight shoplifters and placed 136 in protective custody. Santal Fe hearings on liquor licenses are set for the week, with many not final until the new administration takes over.
