The forecast calls for fair skies on Wednesday with a high near 50. Yesterday reached 49 degrees by 12:30 p.m. and dropped to 14 at 4 a.m. The Gallup Independent office at 500 N Ninth St recorded these readings.

A southern New Mexico bank formerly closed last week and now reopened as First National Bank of Ruidoso. The OCC declared First National Bank of Lincoln County insolvent Friday and the institution was taken over Monday by a newly chartered subsidiary of Alamogordo Bancshares Inc.

Ben Muneta, 34, of Tohatchi, hired Oct. 15 as liaison for Indian Health Service and the Division of Health Improvement Services. He becomes the tribe’s first Navajo in this role as preventive health aims to curb alcoholism, diabetes, heart disease and accidents. Muneta, a Stanford medical graduate, plans to teach prevention and guide new tribal programs to reduce costs and improve health.
Gallup NM. Construction is 98 percent finished but Navajo Pine High School opening is delayed by access road issues and lack of promised teacher housing. Bureau of Indian Affairs rejected road permit, extra funding needed, and housing for teachers remains unavailable, hindering recruitment.
Merchants across Window Rock Kayenta Chinle and Gallup report strong holiday demand with toys tools and electronics selling well. Remote control cars and ornaments lead. Transformaters lag. Kayenta’s new shopping center boosts sales as miners’ layoff dent hits trade. Chinle stays home market grows. Gallup stores report a solid start and outlook for the next two weeks.
Navajo Tribe’s KTNN AM delayed beyond Christmas as Spencer Broadcast Inc. nears completion of a trailer studio. Station manager Stephan Paranto says the January 15 date is definite, with 70 percent of staff hired and Navajo programs ready to air from the hilltop trailer near Window Rock Cinema and transmitters at Sawmill. Four board members named in November plus Freddie Howard of Tolani Lake now serve on the five member board.
The Navajo Housing Authority may owe $500000 back to the federal government after an audit found disallowed costs from 1982 to 1984. Director John Chapela says final audit due in January may lessen penalties and that the agency has reserve funds to cover any repayment. Chapela notes past leadership instability and says the current administration aimed to correct issues.
Washington reports a new amendment may extend the July 1986 deadline for Navajos to move from Hopi land. The revised text delays eviction until relocation housing is ready and sets reporting on the $48 million for relocation efforts. Leaders from Navajo and Hopi tribes welcome or view cautiously this approach as Congress pushes to resolve the decades old land dispute.
