Four candidates who lost in Navajo Chapter Council delegate races appeal to the Navajo Supreme Court after the Navajo Board of Election Supervisors rejected their bids to disqualify winners. Incumbents Yazzie and Gishey contend residency qualifications were not met by the opponents. The law requires permanent residence and three years of continuous presence before the election. Martin to lead ethics office for Navajo Nation
Bernadine Martin became Executive Director of the Navajo Nation Ethics and Rules Office, replacing acting director Ron Haven. Sentencing delayed in Gallup teen stabbing case
Gallup teen Fernando Espinoza 17 pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the March 14 party fight that left Ed Romero 16 dead from 20 chest stab wounds. Judge Joseph Rich rescheduled sentencing to January 4 after a continuance request. Espinoza remains at Regional Juvenile Detention Center.

Gas Restored After Continental Divide Explosion
El Paso Natural Gas said gas service was returning to areas in the Continental Divide after Saturday's natural gas explosion. About 50 homes remained without heat until 10 p.m. Sunday as crews worked to restore gas. Investigators from El Paso Natural Gas and New Mexico State Police awaited a formal report on the cause. The blast created a 65 by 5 foot crater along a 36 inch underground pipeline, with flames burning for over six hours before control.

New Mexico to add three state police officers this Christmas
Gallup and Grants receive two and one officers respectively as part of Governor Johnson's expansion to hire 170 extra troopers by 2002.
