Special prosecutor Michael Hawkins reported no evidence of criminal wrongdoing by Ray mond Tao but found grounds to fire him. The inquiry reviewed 50 to 60 cases, interviewed 36 people, and generated seven recommendations to improve tribal prosecution including fixed terms, stricter guidelines, a central records system, and written case handling rules.
WINDOW ROCK The Navajo Tribal Council Tuesday added more than 20 items to its agenda including funds for pre-schools and power line extensions across seven communities on the reservation. Chairman Peter MacDonald warned not all items may reach the floor this session without resolutions and supporting documents. In the afternoon, the council approved regulations governing forest use and a resolution outlining violations of forest and woodland property.

In Fort Worth Texas police say a stolen pickup loaded with American Indian art valued around 200000 dollars was recovered in Houston. Officers seized the items from a house in Houston Tuesday night. Owners Michael and Joyce L Taylor of Gallup described the collection as priceless, including rugs pottery silver jewelry and arrowheads. The truck had been stolen Monday from a shopping center parking lot after Mrs. Taylor left to buy a gift. A man driving the recovered vehicle claimed to be unaware it was stolen and said he bought the truck for 1000 dollars from a go between. The thief remains at large. The Taylors have traveled globally to collect exhibit and trade Indian art for nine years.
Eastern Bureau reports a weekend operation by the Navajo Nation Selective Enforcement Team led to 44 arrests for drunk driving along NM 197 and surrounding routes. A seven man unit, based in Crownpoint, filled the detention center beyond its 30 prisoner capacity with many inmates transported 65 miles to Crownpoint. The effort aligns with National Drunk and Drugged Driving Awareness Week and previews a Christmas Eve crackdown.
