Explosion, fire scorch Continental Divide area. 100-foot crater
A gas pipeline explosion near Wrangler Road Continental Divide caused a 100-foot crater and a barn fire that burned to the ground. Police closed Interstate 40 for over two hours and about 100 residents were evacuated to Gallup or Thoreau. No injuries were reported.

Window Rock jail escapes fuel calls for more guards
Twenty three inmates have fled the Window Rock jail this year. Six escaped last Saturday when one guard left to collect another prisoner, taking less than three minutes to overpower the remaining guard. Police had apprehended three escapees within an hour, with others still at large Friday. Officials say outdated facilities and funding shortages hinder staffing to meet a 1992 consent decree requiring three guards per shift.
