BLM Faces Navajo Input Challenges Over Coal Plans

BLM officials in Farmington seek Navajo views on coal mining in northwest New Mexico. Of 1,143 letters sent for consultation, only 240 responses were received, with 180 favorable, 41 negative, and 19 unsure. Older Navajos oppose mining. younger seek jobs, and field reps will assess land tracts for religious sites before the March regional coal team meeting.

Jobless rate rises in October in McKinley County

McKinley County's unemployment rose to 9.5 percent in October from September. About 16,978 people were employed in a labor force of 18,756, with 1,778 unemployed. In September, 1,768 were unemployed out of 18,710 in the labor force, while 16,912 were employed. State and national figures also shifted, with New Mexico at 6.9 percent and nationwide at 8.4 percent. Construction and manufacturing added jobs. social services and retail saw declines.

Three injured in bar brawl at Top of the World

Sheriff deputy Marcus Mora was dispatched to the Top of the World Bar at 1:30 a.m. after a disturbance. A stabbing occurred, injuring Clay Clymo, 21, who was hospitalized in Gallup. Suspects Leo Arviso, his wife Rachel, and Johnny Martinez, all of Thoreau, were arrested for interfering and disorderly conduct. New Mexico State Police assisted.
