Hopi tribal officials in KYKOTSMOVI certify Clifford Balenquah, 38, as Bacobi village council representative after delays over alcohol related charges from June. His sister Karen Balenquah is named as alternate. Certification followed village review and Gov Nathan Fred Sr. action.
The House Senate committee approved an amendment to extend the 1986 relocation deadline for Navajos from partitioned lands. The measure rider to the McClure bill would delay relocations by a year while cutting housing funds and setting new reporting and planning deadlines. Navajo and Hopi leaders criticized the move, noting political maneuvering and personal tragedies affecting the debate.
At Window Rock Navajo officials debated a payroll deduction plan to let workers voluntarily buy private insurance via Eldon Nappe. The Advisory Committee approved the Insurance Commission plan of operation 7 to 4 despite objections about outsider sales and lack of tribal review. The vote left a quorum short as members dispersed. The program would shift payroll processing to the financial department to start deductions.
The Puerco Valley Fire District in Sanders Arizona has improved its ISO classification, reducing fire insurance premiums for many properties starting February. The district, serving 1640 square miles along I-40, plans a Lupton substation and has invested in equipment while maintaining a budget around $160,000 for 1985. Fire Chief John Harris, who also teaches English at a local high school, noted the change came after an August evaluation by ISO Commercial Risk Services, with the district moving from Class 10 to Class 9.
