City employees will receive a 5 percent raise starting Dec 24 to reflect higher living costs after City Council action. The measure excludes top managers and includes an amendment for next year to give councilors more say on personnel matters.
Milan Fire Chief George Knotts denies two applications from Brenda Cooper and Charlotte Jarrell, wives of active volunteers, citing a verbal rule against two household members serving. The bylaws, dating to the 1950s, are under review as trustees plan updates.
Edward T Begay of Gallup was named to the New Mexico Highway Commission by Governor-elect Bruce King. Begay, 55, is a private consultant and former Navajo Tribal Council vice chair and McKinley County Commissioner. He studied at Calvin College in Grand Rapids. He and his wife Cecilia have two daughters. King also named Louis J Medrano of Roswell to head the Highway and Transportation Department and Joe M Anaya of Stanley as another highway commissioner.
State Transportation Authority will spend 50 000 to study a railroad linking Gallup and Farmington to haul coal farm products and oil field supplies. San Juan Basin Transportation Development District chair Morgan notes market analyses for coal and non coal commodities. A prior study suggested a 60 to 70 mile route mostly through the Navajo Reservation with costs of 1 million to 1 1 5 million per mile.
State Rep. Dominic Ferrari says he will use leftover re election campaign funds for legislative expenses in Santa Fe that exceed the 75 dollar daily per diem. He notes total campaign spending of 7489.25 from 12952.50 raised, with hotels and travel charged to credit cards and some funds used for two conferences in Tennessee and California. Ferrari defends the use as political expense not personal, asserts most donations come from Gallup, and calls campaign funding essential while urging reform amid Keating controversy.
McKinley County officials agreed to spend up to 50000 on core drilling and groundwater testing at Black Hat and Thoreau landfill sites after the Environmental Improvement Division delayed permits. Public Works Director Radosevich said more information on groundwater levels is needed before permits can be approved, with costs projected between 24000 and 47000. Gamerco remains the only operating county landfill.
