WINDOW ROCK The Navajo Nation faces a 45 percent jobless rate with about 22 700 people living at or below the poverty line. Notah cites low education levels and welfare program dependence, warning that welfare reform could affect around 7 000 residents and cut ongoing assistance.
The Navajo Nation Judicial Conduct Commission ruled Chief Justice Yazzie erred by providing free counsel for Alice Huskie in two pending criminal cases while serving as presiding judge. It said the Pro Bono Rules need revision and that decisions to appoint counsel should not rest with the chief justice.
Attorney General Tom Udall asks New Mexico Supreme Court to review a Court of Appeals ruling that overturned 1995 Las Cruces convictions for Gordon House in a 1992 drunken driving crash that killed four people. House, Native American descent, was sentenced to 22 years in 1995 after Las Cruces conviction and released in 1996 pending appeal.
Six hopefuls will compete for the interim Tribal Council seat in Shiprock after the death of William Tso. The winner will serve until tribal elections next year. Nomination petitions produced ten names, four failed to file by the 5 p.m. deadline. The six who qualified each gained more than the 90 required signatures, led by Richard Begaye and Wallace Charley.
Acoma Sky City Community School cross-country team heads to Portland Oregon to compete at nationals for the 14th consecutive year. Thirteen members join 81 New Mexico runners as families travel to support. Coach Harold Chino notes a team effort across a perfect season and a storied running tradition.
Wally Brown a Coppermine Chapter silversmith announces candidacy for Navajo Nation president next year. A 1965 Sanders High School graduate, he served a two year LDS mission, studied at Brigham Young University, and earned an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps in 1968. Brown, now self employed, seeks a worldwide Navajo focus, stressing family, grazing, water and land rights, unemployment, and stronger ties with state and federal governments. He says government must protect people and empower self help, urging grassroots change starting at the presidency.
Navajo Nation President Albert Hale accused Secretary Bruce Babbitt of sacrificing Navajo water rights for an environmentalist agenda. He said the San Juan Chama project required giving up 110000 acre feet annually with no return, leaving the Navajo Irrigation Project half complete and over 30 years behind schedule. Hale urged action after noting a 1992 directive to quantify rights on the San Juan River.
