Navajo Supreme Judicial Council rules on Benally disqualification
The Navajo Supreme Judicial Council issues a written opinion upholding the disqualification of Donald Benally from the Shiprock ballot. The court says the Board of Election Supervisors has authority to decide candidate qualifications and recommends amending election law to confirm this power. Lewis and Head Councilman Quincy Panteah lead the governor race, with Lewis's running mate Theodore Edaakie and Panteah's Calvin Eustace. Seventeen candidates vie for council seats, including four incumbents. Primary results earlier in October narrowed the governor field to Lewis and Panteah.

State police withheld name of man killed on Interstate 40 in eastern McKinley County after being struck by a tractor-trailer driven by William Hess of Owasso Oklahoma. Hess uninjured. victim reportedly had been drinking. Police report 33 weekend crashes in city with one injury.

GALLUP Elnora Scannell director of Casa San Martin received the eighth annual human rights award from the Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is on Sunday night in the Gallup Public Library community room. The center on the Northside aids travelers with a lunch program chapel and thrift shop and Scannell noted they welcome all who come as if they were Jesus. She has worked at Casa San Martin since moving from Madison Wisconsin five years ago after retiring as a court reporter.
