WINDOW ROCK A three day session of the Navajo Tribal Council is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday with the agenda to be released Monday after Advisory Committee meetings. This marks the last session for more than 40 delegates who did not run or were defeated in the November election.
Six month old Casey Nez, son of Danny Nez and Debra Jim of Window Rock, hopes Santa brings a new crib boy clothes and baby toys for a special holiday season.
Wilfred Bowman says Donald Dodge will remain in Aberdeen through January 15 before resuming duties in Window Rock. The extension, ordered by John Fritz, deputy assistant secretary for Indian Affairs, follows Dodge’s July transfer after endorsing Navajo chairman-elect Zach. Inauguration for Zach and Edward Begay planned for January 11.
In a tight tribal election at Zuni, Quincy Panteah defeated Governor Robert Lewis 473 to 421. Panteah and Chauncey Simplicio will serve four year terms. Sefferino Eriacho Sr. was elected head councilman with 530 votes, with six council members also chosen. Over 2,000 registered to vote just before the registration deadline.
Defendants including the City of Gallup and Ramah groups move in Albuquerque federal court to dismiss the Zuni Tribe suit alleging water rights south of Gallup. They argue indispensable parties the U.S. government and Navajo Tribe were not named, while Ramah entities replace Ramah Town in the action. The Zuni Tribe seeks injunctions to halt water drilling in an aquifer claimed to serve the Zuni Reservation.
Holiday and The Transient Spies Committee in Gallup organize a Christmas Care Crusade to collect canned food warm clothing and money for destitute Gallup families senior citizens and transient families running December 15 through 30. The plan appears in the Living section.
Apache County Board of Supervisors approved a plan to begin road work on Navajo Reservation school bus routes with priority to those roads. Three intergovernmental agreements must still be approved by the Navajo Tribe and the Bureau of Indian Affairs before work can start. If signed, it would be the first Arizona county tribal roadwork accord linking Navajo Nation BIA and county for road and flood control projects.
Eastern Bureau reports Navajo planners propose a single compromise right of way for the Navajo Railroad from Gallup to Farmington and a parallel water pipeline from Navajo Reservoir toward Gallup. The design would drive pumping via train treadles, cut costs, and reduce energy needs, with retrofitting as an alternative. Construction tentatively set for early 1960s.
Governors from 19 New Mexico pueblos cast ballots at Santa Clara Pueblo near Espanola to choose between incumbent Delfin Lovato and Santo Domingo councilor Seferino Tenorio. The winner will lead the council, oversee a $35 000 annual salary, and represent 50 000 Pueblo Indians in negotiations and lobbying at state and federal levels.
