Dorm idea at UNM Gallup rests on mixed survey

NTUA studies power plans under consideration

Navajo Tribal Utility Authority general manager Medicine Bear told the Economic Development Committee that NTUA is weighing several power projects. Options include 30 megawatts of gas-fired turbine power near Aneth Montezuma Creek Utah, and near low-BTU gas along US 666. Also reviewed is 30 to 50 megawatts from the Salt River Project and up to 50 megawatts from Westinghouse coal plant. A $7.9 million cost to tie in a potato processing plant was noted, with rates to cover costs. The Navajo Nation Council will take up the potato plant decision next week.

Window Rock Sergeant John Wallace Yazzie Named

Wallace Yazzie, Window Rock District sergeant, is the eighth in rank and first as tribal police sergeant. A former 101st Airborne Ranger, he joined in 1989 as one of four original motorcycle officers and has led K 9, SWAT, and Tactical Operations. He must complete a 90 day probation to permanent rank.

EPA cites fines after fuel paperwork gaps in Navajo Nation

EPA inspectors found no leaking fuel at Kayenta Black Mesa Many Farms and Shiprock sites but cited five reservation businesses and a school for missing documentation. Fines totaled 1570 dollars as OSHA noted paperwork delays during the transition. Officials from Kayenta Unified School District and local entities described miscommunication and disputed specific penalties.
