Organizers barred flights and warned defiers would not be invited back. Some pilots visited local schools to discuss hot air balloons while organizers prepared a launch from Red Rock State Park. At Church Rock Elementary, four planned takeoffs were canceled. crews turned the event into an open air aviation education moment with demonstrations and literature donated for kindergarten through fifth grade lessons. Pilots and crews used propane flare demonstrations to engage about aviation science. Church Rock Principal Dan Kaminsky said the school will incorporate aviation into its curriculum.
Galloping Gas, a 22-inch refugee doll from Gallup High School, travels hundreds of miles across the U S over 19 months after vanishing from school counselor Carol Martinson. Postcards from Las Vegas to Hawaii traced its journey before Gus finally returns on Halloween night in Ponchatoula. The doll, used as a teaching aid, arrives with a home made mask and photo album, and Martinson remains puzzled about who staged the adventure.
Mary Wicott reports from the Western Navajo Ske Tuba City and Page areas that the Tuba City District of the Navajo Department of Enforcement plans a fundraising drive for a 16-student trip to the Fiesta Bowl in Tempe. Police Officer Ron Brown says about $1,000 for lodging and $800 for meals are needed, with donations of sandwiches snacks and fruit welcomed.
