Trial date set for state Rep Albert Shirley on DWI marijuana charges

State Rep Albert Shirley, a four term legislator from McKinley/Cibola, faces trial in Gallup for driving while intoxicated and possession of less than one ounce of marijuana. District Judge Benjamin Eastburn will oversee the case, with the jury trial scheduled for February 18 in Gallup after Shirley previously disqualified a Gallup judge. He pleaded not guilty at arraignment after booking and brief jail time, with prior DWI convictions in 1987 in Santa Fe and a 1996 no contest in Arizona.

Jury grows to nine for MacDonald Big Boquillas Ranch case

In Window Rock Arizona jury selection continued Thursday for the Big Boquillas Ranch trial of suspended Navajo Chairman Peter MacDonald and his son Peter Rocky MacDonald. Nine potential jurors have been chosen with a full Navajo panel of four men and five women. Impartial jurors are hard to find amid publicity over the $33.4 million ranch purchase. A second group of 49 potential jurors is due back, with three more to be selected.

Two Vehicles In Wreck Near Tullers Cafe on Highway 264

About 11 a.m. Thursday two westbound vehicles collided near Tullers Cafe on Highway 264. A tribal sedan driven by Fred Tahe of the Navajo scholarship office was rear ended by a van driven by George Pooley of Pooley's Mortuary in Fort Defiance. Pooley was ejected and suffered head injuries, later taken to UNM Medical Center in Albuquerque. Tahe sustained no serious injuries.
