Police seek a caller from a voice recording who warned the refinery would burn less than two hours before a 1500acre complex explosion in Linden New Jersey injuring 29 and causing millions in damage. The FBI may compare the tape to voice prints as investigators pursue a deliberate sabotage theory.
Washington State Department spokesman says Secretary Rogers is considering a month long Vietnam truce over the holidays to push toward a permanent end of fighting. Sen Jackson proposed extending the Christmas cease fire through Tet to allow Paris peace negotiators to intensify talks for a lasting cease fire.
Senator J. W. Fulbright reports no reply from North Vietnam to his six month old appeal for the names of American prisoners of war. He recalls Ho Chi Minh refused to treat prisoners as a separate issue and says the fight should end the war to secure all Americans home. He notes strong, hostile mail since criticizing a U S commando raid.
Former Interior Secretary Walter Hickel, speaking publicly for the first time since his dismissal, condemns the negative tactics of the 1970 campaign. WINDOW ROCK Ariz staff. The Navajo Tribal council approved the probationary appointments of Joe G Benally and John M Benally to the Trial Court of the Navajo Tribe. Chief Justice Virgil Kirk Jr. addressed questions about the two proposed judges during a one hour meeting with no other business. Joe Benally has served as a police officer and Navajo Tribal ranger and worked as a San Juan County Deputy sheriff.
In Burgos Spain the trial of 16 Basque nationalists was halted as one of seven military judges fell ill and no resumption date was set. The Franco government pushes on amid civil unrest and a kidnapping case involving West Germany’s honorary consul in San Sebastian.
Indian Commissioner Louis Bruce announces a change in the Indian Bureau to rename superintendents as field administrators. The reform shifts decision making toward Indians, with field admins absorbing authority from reduced area directors who will serve as technical advisers. Bruce, Mohawk, says the move aims to empower Indians and speed reform.
