Snow closes Gallup area roads and schools

The heaviest snowfall of the season blankets Gallup as four inches fall by 7 a.m. and winds gust to 20 mph. Navajo Council to Meet Coalition Amid Mourning and Protests

Navajo Tribal Council plans talks with Dine Bii Coalition leaders next Tuesday to discuss demands while mourning councilman Randolph Begay who died Monday night. Demonstrators number over 100 outside and inside the chambers, some anti Coalition. Council considers sending the Supreme Judicial Council proposal to local levels for feedback and may permanently appoint two probationary judges. MacDonald urged dialogue and offered a meeting when ready. Coalition organizer Larry Anderson said he would attend next Tuesday. Police monitored the protests with no incidents reported.

Offenders Become FLIP For Gallup Youth Program Change

The Gallup First Offenders program is renamed to Family Learning and Intervention Program FLIP and moved to the Ford Canyon Youth Center. New counselors guide adolescents and their families through a five week weekly two hour session focusing on communication and listening. Follow up will measure repeat offenses and family understanding.

Crownpoint Seeks Health Director Fast

Crownpoint service unit health board approved a resolution urging the Navajo Area IHS to expedite hiring a permanent service unit director for the hospital, vacant since last spring. Dr. Marlene Haffner noted recruitment is difficult and emphasized finding a qualified candidate, with possible internal detailing as a last resort. New board members were installed and ten members were re-elected, while three chapters have not sent representatives.
