Britain extends deadline for Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith and his Cabinet as they weigh a working document agreed by Harold Wilson and Smith. If rejected, Britain may seek mandatory UN sanctions, risking impact on both economies and South Africa relations. Transition government and Gibbs governorship could form the new Rhodesia lineup with moderate white and possibly African participation.
The Gallup McKinley County Board of Education will meet at 7 30 tonight at Wilson School 1100 E Aztec. Agenda includes construction progress reports, a report from the director of instruction, a report on the public school finance workshop and a report on the National Council of Teachers of English conference. The meeting is open to the public.
D A Lomax president of Lomax Appraisal and Consultation Service will present a McKinley County property reappraisal report to county commissioners on Wednesday at 7 p m. He said about a percent of urban enumeration is finished and Gallup is completed. The firm conducts reappraisal programs in four counties and will move to farm and ranch areas next.
The Gallup Christmas Canyon in Ford Canyon near the city pool opens at 7 tonight. Jaycee chairman Frank Garcia praises the display after 7,000 hours of work and thanks Navajo painter Chester Kahn. New scenes include the Nativity and the Annunciation with a 65 foot tree and a 25 foot Nativity figures. Gallup High School pep band under John Bubek will perform at the opening.
State police awaited an autopsy on Kee Pena a 50 year old Counselor's Trading Post man found dead Saturday night in the rear of a station wagon near Lybrook New Mexico 44 about 33 miles northwest of Cuba. Coroner De Spey said the body was transported for the autopsy.
Five persons were injured in McKinley County traffic accidents over several days. Carl Martin of Crownpoint sustained a head injury when his pickup left State Rd 56 near Thoreau, hit a pole, and was thrown from the vehicle. Raymond Shorty, a passenger, suffered minor injuries. State Police plan drunk driving charges for both.

Balloting underway to elect four Gallup McKinley Chamber of Commerce directors for three year terms. Candidates include Oscar Baize H V Eppler Floyd Henderson Deb Howell James Morris Harry Patterson Joseph Rich Don Stokes Frank Stevens. Ballots counted Tuesday results announced Wednesday.
American fighters clashed with MIG17s and MIG21s while 16 bombers pounded a Haiphong Ha Gia oil depot north of Hanoi. Reports say one MIG was shot down and another possibly. U.S. losses included eight planes a day earlier. Ingersoll engaged shore batteries off North Viet Nam. slight damage with no casualties.
AP report says 20 year old Jonny Sanchez of Belen died in a two car collision four miles north of Belen on August 8 1985. The wreck involved Sanchez's car rear ending a vehicle driven by Lonnie Perea 20 of Los Lunas.
Gallup police investigated two deaths and several thefts over the weekend. Vivian Bezy was found dead at her home with an apparent overdose and a suicide note in her hand. Jimmy Barney died in city jail after illness during detention. Priseciano DeVargas was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon after a stabbing at a car lot. An Indian blanket and a Cathedral High School class ring were reported stolen.
Residential solicitation starts today to raise 250 000 for a new 40 bed hospital with advance gifts totaling 125 673 to date. Special gifts reach 25 563 cash with 60 percent of prospects. Rehoboth Mission employees have 25 000. Col Edward L. Kloos named chairman with Leonard W. Gordon and Mrs Sue Grubisich as co chairs. Division majors include Mrs Helen Stansberry John Williams Floyd Higgins and others.
Rochester firemen rushed to a 28 story climb after a false alarm at the Xerox Corp building under construction. They shut power and elevators, hauled gear up stairs in zero degree weather, then found the flames were a controlled kerosene fire used to dry concrete.
Mrs Vivian I Bezy 39 died Sunday in Gallup. Services and burial set at Strong Thorne Mortuary Albuquerque. Born Bernalillo she lived in Gallup a year. Survived by husband Bernard four daughters including Susan Jensen and Patricia Jensen and Tracy Poe all of Albuquerque parents C E Poe Albuquerque three sisters Ima Glover Dennis Texas Felva Trout Elsie Wills Albuquerque two grandchildren.
Flagstaff Arizona AP Russell Foutz of Shiprock was elected president of the United Indian Traders Association at its annual meeting in Flagstaff. Bill Palallup was named first vice president and Palmer became a director. Hare Springer of Gallup named as new director as about 100 Indian trading post operators attended.
