Arizona Governor Bruce Babbitt's budget drafters recommend raising the next fiscal budget by 230 million dollars. The extra funds would come from extending the current one-year sales tax increase.
Santa Fe lawmakers respond cautiously to Governor Anaya's request for a large tax hike to fund education pay raises. Republicans resist. Democrats seek link to targeted funding. Some support for a $25,000 teacher starting salary may cost the state hundreds of millions. others push for alternatives and cautious budgeting ahead of election-year politics. A state lottery proposal is rumored but unconfirmed.

The Navajo Tribal Council approved 600000 from land claims settlements to purchase the May Field Ranch about 45 miles southeast of Farmington. The 39640 acre parcel includes deeded land, BLM leases and state leases. subsurface owned by others and not included. Gartner outlines entertainment plans and one ticket concept to boost visitor stays.
Eastern Bureau reports testing continues at the Plains Escalante Generating Station with officials aiming to generate electricity early next week. Plant Manager David Richards says startup should begin Monday with power on Tuesday or Wednesday after prior delays from a lubrication contamination incident. The $400 million facility will eventually produce 210,000 watts per hour, initially using fuel oil though capable of coal natural gas and fuel oil.
A local citizens group opposing drunk driving moved a public forum to the Kiva Room at the McKinley County Chamber of Commerce on Coal Avenue at 7 30 p m Monday due to a scheduling conflict with the district courtroom Public officials will speak and discuss ideas to curb alcohol related accidents in the county The group seeks Mothers Against Drunk Driving affiliation to gain visibility legal backing and expertise Chief organizers are Terry Peters Richard Coca and Vickie Shaffer
Crownpoint Mobil Oil Corp plans to amend its wastewater discharge permit with New Mexico EID to stop injections of leaching solutions while allowing continued pumping of water to restore underground aquifers near Crownpoint. A public hearing may follow if public interest exists, per BID and EID spokespeople.
Gallup and State police responded to a Friday night crash on U.S. Highway 66 near Industrial Drive. Patrick Azua, 21, of 701 E Green, sped and lost control as his 1978 Chevy pickup slid on ice, flipped three times, ending on its top. He suffered head injuries and was hospitalized. he was cited for careless driving.
