Gallup-McKinley County Schools show a 4.9 percent district drop-out rate for 1998-99, up from 4.0 percent the prior year but below the 1996-97 high. County high schools largely stay under 5 percent, while Gallup High records 8.8 percent and Thoreau High 8.1. A Las Vegas man riding as a passenger in a speeding 65 mph vehicle with an open driver door was arrested on cocaine and marijuana charges after deputies discovered two suitcases containing about 8 grams of cocaine and marijuana beneath a trunk area. Wesley Brown, 31, was jailed on felony possession of cocaine and marijuana under eight ounces, plus drug paraphernalia.

Man Killed Crossing Highway in Kayenta
Kayenta Ariz a 69 year old man identified as John Burns died Saturday night after attempting to cross a poorly lit main highway at Mile Post 394 on U S 163 in Monument Valley town ship. Police said alcohol on his breath preceded the fatal strike by a Chevrolet pickup. a second and third vehicle also involved. The Kayenta Criminal Investigations Department is reviewing the case.
