Gallup History Exhibit Extends Through September at Library

A long running Gallup Images exhibit at Gallup Public Library titled Walk through History 1981 1981 is extended through September. Curator Octavia Fellin notes the show highlights Gallups early growth including pioneers families such as Hugh Quinn Gus Mulholland Sam Brown Bustamante brothers and others. The display mixes photos of ethnic groups organizations landmarks transportation labor and churches with notable images from the railroad era and El Navajo Harvey House.

County misinformed on aged says state

McKinley County leaders dispute a state move to withdraw MACOG’s designation as Area Agency on Aging. The county approved a letter from the district attorney disputing the action and pledging to resist termination in violation of federal law. Ramos says the state will oversee planning for sponsors in San Juan and McKinley counties. The board also plans an advisory council to shape policy for elderly programs.

Homestake plans over 100 layoffs in New Mexico

Homestake Mining Co plans layoffs exceeding one hundred workers in its mining operations in Grants New Mexico amid a broader downturn in uranium and gold markets. As of Friday eighty five workers were laid off with twenty three more to lose jobs next Friday. Production at Section 13 mines will be suspended and the mill's operation reduced to a 10 day on 4 day off cycle beginning September 6. Section 23 and 25 keep producing. The mill has run at about one third capacity, with about 650 in mining and milling affected.
