Paiute Tribe Eyes Bellmont Land Casino Site In Arizona

The San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe near Tuba City has optioned 54 acres in Bellmont for a potential casino. Phoenix developer Jerry Diddy represents the tribe and says details aren’t disclosed. revenue would help pay debt. The plan calls for 50,000 square feet of gambling space and a 75,000-square-foot multipurpose building. Local zoning could be overridden if land is taken into trust. BIA hearings will seek public comment though no formal trust application has been filed. The 250-member tribe has members across the Navajo Reservation in northern Arizona and southeastern Utah.

Knife on Thoreau student key ring triggers suspension

A 17 year old Calbert Wilson at Thoreau High School was found with a pocketknife on August 23. He was suspended for five days and referred to juvenile probation after the deputy booked the blade into evidence under zero tolerance. The district reported the incident to police as required by policy.

Greyhills High School chief kept after audit concerns

TUBA CITY Arizona Greyhills High School Superintendent Mitch Kalauli survived a June 9 special meeting with strong community support. The 6-0 board vote kept him on, following questions over a missing three year audit and budget issues. About 125 attended, with 25 parents and officials speaking in Kalauli's defense. The audit for 1997-98 found posting errors but no misuse of funds. Kalauli said accountability will be emphasized and wiser use of finances pursued.

DWI Arrests Down While Alcohol Crashes Rise in New Mexico

In New Mexico drunken driving arrests fell to 19,056 in 1999, the lowest since 1988, while deaths in alcohol involved highway crashes rose 2 percent to 192. Activist Linda Atkinson cites complacency and urges stronger enforcement and checkpoints to curb drinking and driving.
