Ceremonial artists debate Gallup show woes and Market competition

In Gallup the Ceremonial art show faced dull crowds and weak advertising while the Santa Fe Indian Market draws up to 100000 visitors and 1100 artists in 640 booths. Buyers and educated patrons were scarce at Ceremonial, prompting calls for better outreach and targeted sales events to attract serious collectors.

Diné tribal treasurer accused of stealing funds

Diné Bureau WINDOW ROCK. Joey Antonio Jr. of Upper Fruitland Cheefl faces ethics charges for writing himself checks and charging airline tickets and car rentals totaling 17026. The complaint lists 44 unauthorized checks cashed for 16180 from June 2 1997 to April 23 1999. A Sept 19 22 1997 airline trip with his grandfather from Albuquerque to Dallas Fort Worth is also noted. He is to appear before Navajo Nation Council Ethics and Rules Committee on Sept 14.

Turpen Elementary opens new 22,000-foot building in Gallup

Turpen Elementary School in Gallup officially opened its 22,000-square-foot campus housing offices library computer lab and gym cafeteria. A second phase with 18 classrooms is underway funded by 3.4 million from the state after a 2.4 million initial build. Students will attend classes in portable rooms until furniture books and moves are completed. Local parents staff and students celebrated the new facilities including a basketball goal and computers.

Begaye Jumps Into Navajo Election Lawsuit

Navajo President Kelsey Begaye seeks to intervene in a case led by Edison Wauneka and 10 others challenging the Sept. 5 ballot. The suit in Window Rock District Court seeks a restraining order and to restore the Board of Election Supervisors, arguing conflict of interest in the IGRC taking election powers. Begaye criticized referendum language changes and called for clear language.
