Burned land now haven for wildlife near La Jara fire

Christian Oberholser reports that one year after the La Jara wildfire, thousands of acres remain restricted to motorized access while foot visitors can view new wildflowers and wildlife. Fire destruction gave way to habitat for black backed woodpeckers, rodents, elk, and deer as birds and insects proliferate in the regrowth.

Judgecuts jail time for felon

BELTRAN JARAMILLO a 38 year old Cibola County man was convicted April 22 1999 on three counts of larceny and a fourth offense of driving while intoxicated all felonies He admitted habitual offender status Judge Artie ordered 18 months for each larceny count totaling four and a half years but suspended all prison time on those counts He then sentenced 18 months for the DWI count suspended all but 10 months resulting in a 10 month custodial term He also imposed five years probation and allowed credit for 173 days pre sentence confinement Upon release he is to report to a Dallas prevention program Part of the sentence allows avoidance of habitual offender jail time unless the repeat offender agreement is violated Other dispositions included Sylvia Salcido 60 of San Rafael for assaulting a police officer sentenced to 364 days in jail suspended placed on unsupervised probation for 364 days Raelynn Armijo 19 of Seboyeta for careless driving 364 days in jail suspended placed on supervised probation 364 days Eric Pancho 23 for multiple misdemeanors including criminal trespass resisting obstructing an officer reckless driving and driving while license suspended or revoked See Judge cuts jail time page 2

Habitat for Humanity work accelerates in Gallup

Elizabeth Hardin Burrola reports Gallup volunteers push to form a local Habitat for Humanity affiliate. Fourteen volunteers met to discuss progress and a wish list for donations of time space and money while plans include a Community Building Potluck on Aug 24 at First United Methodist Church to inform and recruit volunteers and elect a board.
