In Gallup a one month delay in redesigning plans for a MARA group home for handicapped women is framed as a HUD funding concession. Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Co a Gulf Oil unit completes the purchase of Kemmerer Coal Co for 330 million dollars. Kemmerer, mining since 1897 in Wyoming, produced 4.3 million tons last year and held a 50 percent stake in an Emery Utah mine producing 600000 tons. The deal gives 93000 net acres in Wyoming Utah Colorado and raises PNM to the eighth largest US coal producer with 16 million tons annual capacity.
City Manager Paul McCollum will report on the Neighborhood Center pool closed since May for roof repairs after a Monday inspection by Randy Holt. Discussion items include election official appointments for the Aug. 25 city election on restaurant licenses, pay approvals for Allgood Sterling and Mataya, Rehoboth water zone upgrades, and two sanitation and police budget adjustments.
Air traffic between the United States and Europe rebounded as carriers diverted North Atlantic routes to avoid Canada following a strike support boycott. Canadian controllers at five airports cleared U S flights during a 12 hour shutdown, while Gander and others held back. By night, traffic began to recover as airlines rerouted south to bypass Canadian air space.
Fire Chief Alfred Abeita describes progress on a new Gallup fire station on South Second Street at Nizhoni Boulevard to solve cramped quarters, improve space for code compliance and training, and accommodate expanded services. The building, expected ready by year end, includes offices, classrooms, drill area, storage, and living spaces for firefighters.
The Inter Tribal Indian Ceremonial concludes with over 650 volunteers thanked for their help. Gallup High cheerleading clinic runs this week at the school. Houston man James E. Richard was arrested after Officer Myron Spencer at a Gallup truck stop suspected two nervous suspects nearby. The stolen vehicle from Houston had its plate reported, leading to the arrest. In a separate incident a Gallup youth bitten by a dog was treated at McKinley General Hospital and the dog impounded.
Gary Yazzie, a Gallup painter born near Phoenix, took Best in Class for an oil painting of a cowboy and mustangs at the Ceremonial show after entering seven pieces. He also earned two firsts, a third, and a special award, marking his first major prize since returning to Ceremonial competition in 1978.
