Missing Milan cash shakes village leadership

In Milan the suspected embezzlement of 100000 to 300000 dollars since 1995 hangs over village government as clerk Sandra Gonzales is suspended without pay after a special May 19 meeting. Auditor Gary Gaylord and the mayor Elisabeth Lopez Rael say the exit interview is underway and the audit will be public ten days after release. investigators say the probe is complete and has moved to the district attorney.

Milan Relay for Life fundraiser kicks off at Zuni Mountain Golf

At 6 p.m. Friday ten area teams begin a Relay for Life at Zuni Mountain Golf Course to walk until noon Saturday. Teams raise funds through bake sales car washes and dinners with local companies matching gifts. Funds support American Cancer Society research and education, with a portion kept locally this year.

Six vie for Miss Ceremonial crown in Gallup pageant

Audris doe reports the Gallup Miss Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial queen will be crowned Saturday after three days of competition. The event started Wednesday at the Best Western Inn and Suites with six traditionally dressed contestants and about 200 luncheon attendees. The Gallup Soroptimist Club sponsored the luncheon and awarded 2000 Woman of Distinction to District Attorney Mary Ellen Baker. Contestants described themselves in prerecorded tapes to ease jitters.

Gold concho belt wins best of show

At the 79th Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial opening night at Red Rock State Park crowds browsed stalls and artists, as the ceremonial association lifted a Wednesday night sales ban. Roderick R. Tenorio of Santo Domingo won Best of Show with a 14 karat gold inlay concho belt featuring ten panels of Indian images.

Tribal youth office remains years away plan stalled

Diné Bureau reports Navajo Nation leaders remain far from forming a separate tribal division for youth. Budget and Finance Committee told Begaye a plan cannot proceed until fiscal year 2001, with a potential $39 million cost and a proposed Oct. 1 start. The Education Division would transfer to executive offices as the Office in Diné Youth, contingent on multiple committee approvals and a tight budget deadline.
