Navajo Nation voters face a crowded field of fifteen candidates in a high turnout primary. Interim president Leonard Haskie predicts a landslide, while Peterson Zach and Peter MacDonald decline to estimate totals amid a peaceful race and renewed calls for unity.
Navajo Election Board reversed its ruling and will allow Kay Bennett to appear on the presidential primary ballot at 109 chapter houses as a write in in the 15th spot though her photo will not be shown. Industry officials say Stone Forest Industries plans to temporarily close its Eagar lumber mill, laying off 420 workers and furloughing 95 more at a Reserve New Mexico mill, with no stated reopening date. The Forest Service timber cuts and owl protections drive up costs and limit supply, amplifying layoffs and regional economic impact.
