Tso Chooses Self-Sufficiency Focus For Navajo Chairman Bid
Raymond Hosteen Tso campaigns on unemployment and economic self-reliance for the Navajo Nation. The Shiprock businessman points to Farmington’s growth as a model and calls for a Navajo merchants system, energy labor ties, and repeal of the Navajo Hopi Relocation Act to enable residents to stay on their land. He cites a campaign spend near 1000 dollars funded by his committee and relatives.

Lukachukai Interview Chance with Former Navajo Chairman Nakai
Raymond Nakai, former Navajo Tribal Council chairman from 1962 to 1970, refused an Independent interview in Lukachukai this month. An Independent reporter visited Nakai’s press secretary Terry Allen and was told Nakai was campaigning and unavailable. Allen said Nakai dislikes press due to misquotations. a phone line to the press officer was disconnected and Nakai did not call back. Nakai has run against incumbent Peter MacDonald in every tribal election since 1970.

Gallup youth hurt in traffic crash at Aztec and Valentina
Gallup police reported a youth was injured when a motorcycle collided with a car at Aztec Avenue and Valentina Drive about 5 PM. The driver Wilma Vandoren and the other motorist received citations. Joe Smiley was also injured when a pickup backed over him near the Silver Spur Lounge. The driver left the scene. police are investigating. Calvary Christian Academy is accepting applications through August 16.

Galanis: McKinley County finances in strong shape
County Treasurer George Galanis says McKinley County is in excellent financial condition entering 1982-83 with $8 billion in assets including investments and receivables. Tax collection for 1981-82 reached about $67.1 million with $1.1 million unpaid, and county investments earned a record $463,000 last year on $4.7 million in bank deposits. The county bonds for Harold L. Runnels Recreation Complex and McKinley General Hospital face remaining balances, with total bonding capacity at $9 million, about one third used. The pool remains $356,556 short of completion.
