Indian art bequest boosts Red Rock Museum collection
Elizabeth Andrew Houser, a Los Angeles cellist with a passion for Southwestern and Eskimo art, left a $70,000 collection to the Red Rock Museum in Gallup. The bequest, to be housed in a Houser-named room, includes 51 jewelry pieces, 27 Navajo rugs valued at $34,700, eight paintings, pottery, baskets, and other items from Santo Domingo to Cochiti, reflecting her dream of a permanent, start-up museum display. The donors The Indian and I shop owners Theda and Michael Bassman traveled from Palm Desert to present the collection during the ceremonial week.
