New Mexico Council on Crime and Delinquency spokesmen described state work and the goal to rewrite the 1979 sentencing act, warning of a potential $250 million impact. Community services for the handicapped outlined progress, costs, and plans for group homes and new centers, with Sunnyside pre-school expanding to 20 children and a halfway house acquired in the past year.
WINDOW ROCK Ariz The Navajo Tribal Council chairman race narrows to two after a primary that leaves 12 candidates. Perry B Allen leads the ballot by straw draw and pledges reform to curb political appointments while pursuing a constitution for the tribe. Taylor McKenzie, a physician and longtime Indian Health Service official, takes the No 2 spot and vows to strengthen tribal health programs as the contest moves toward the runoff.
The Knights of Columbus host a family day picnic this Sunday with a Bible school for children. The event offers a $150.4 per person rate and welcomes all attendees. First Baptist Church at 310 and Artec hosts the activities and provides contact at 722-4401.
An Albuquerque man was killed and another injured when their car ran off State Route 412 about three miles south of I-40 late Friday. Larry V. Vigil, 23, of Golden, was taken to Bernalillo County Medical Center with multiple head and chest injuries. Vigil died from a broken neck. the other driver's identity is withheld pending kin notification. The body was taken to Grants Mortuary.
Pete Osceola brings an Florida caught alligator to Gallup for Inter-Tribal Ceremonial. The creature will wrestle at Red Rock State Park during afternoon shows Thursday through Sunday, with program director William Ganong describing the danger from the tail and teeth. Two bid openings are planned this month by Gallup-McKinley County.
The district will open bids on August 10 at 11 a.m. for carpeting and on August 24 at a.m. for welding supplies and equipment. A Monday 7:30 p.m. school board meeting will discuss sports, cafeteria, gym, and greenhouse repairs at Washington and Navajo Elementary. UNM alumni invites extend to Friday with calls to Jim Néchero. Bree firewood program in Zuni Mountains allows free personal use with no permit. YCC youths in Chaco Canyon build facilities and learn work and environmental topics before August end.
