Dwayne Jordan, longtime executive assistant to Tribal Chairman Peter MacDonald, is promoted to director of the Navajo Energy Development Authority, reporting to the chairman. NEDA, created May 1980, will implement a new Navajo energy policy and pursue funding, contracts, and feasibility analyses. Jordan, a controversial figure, will coordinate all NEDA activities and work with Gilbert Harrison on organizing the agency. Four people were seriously injured Monday night in a head-on crash. Rhonda Swatzell, 21, was admitted in satisfactory condition. Rose Chavez, 21, fractured leg, treated and listed in satisfactory condition. Armand Ortega, 53, in intensive care, stable. Shirley Ortega, 39, treated and released. Albert Ortega, 9, and David Ortega, 17, uninjured. Swatzell cited for intoxication, no license, driving jest of center line, and no headlights.

A national air controllers strike shuts down Frontier Airlines service to Gallup for an indefinite period. Mayor Wayne Lewis learned of the halt via telegram. Frontier offices confirm cancellations of four daily flights beginning tonight. Sun West Airlines will continue service on the Gallup Phoenix route, with tickets being refunded or rebooked.
