The Ethics and Rules Committee also approved Frank Chee Willeto Sr. for the Education Committee and advance Navajo Nation trademark discussions, alongside quarterly updates from Begaye Speaker Begay and Chief Justice Yazzie.
The New Mexico Senate defeated the newly negotiated Indian gambling compacts 25 to 16 on Friday and again on reconsideration. The move ends Senate consideration in the special session and could send the issue to the courts. The 1997 compacts remain in place for seven more years despite cashed revenue sharing disputes.
A Friday crash on eastbound I-40 near mile marker 89 left three people seriously injured. A silver car rammed into multiple vehicles creating a chain reaction involving five cars. The injured, occupants of the silver and white cars, were hospitalized in Grants. Fire crews pried open the silver car door to aid occupants as investigators sorted facts amid wet road conditions and ongoing traffic delays.
Supporters of former Navajo President Peterson Zah will hold an appreciation day on April 21 at the Navajo Nation Museum. Festivities begin at 9 a.m. with a noon keynote and gift presentations, followed by a $15 plate barbecue at 1 p.m. The event aims to honor Zah for his eight years as tribal leader and his role in creating the permanent trust fund.
