Daniel W. Hoover Lions Club Chairman announces a new feature for Farmers Day corn husking on Saturday evening October 5. He has secured three prizes from Lion Robinson for the women’s contest, run like the men’s, with five ladies already entered. He invites others to join.
The thirty second annual Knights and Ladies of the Golden Eagle convention in Washington Boro ended with a grand parade and festival. Harry K. Weaver of the borough was chosen president, Maud Heller vice president, and officers named include John B. Grabill secretary and Jennie Warfel treasurer. The Ladies Temple of Hellertown marching unit stood out, with Blue Rock Castle as host.
The Ladies' Bible Class at Ranck's United Brethren church elected officers including Teacher Mrs. Mabel Ranck and president Mrs. Roxie Asner. Committees for Devotional Social Flower Membership were named. The next meeting is Thursday October 17 at Mrs. Ella Seldomridge's home in Blue Ball.
Lavina H. Rissler sold the dwelling house at 223 Brimmer Avenue in this borough at a public sale on Saturday September 21 1935 to Catharine P Henninger for 3350 dollars. M M Kling acted as the auctioneer and Styer Evans were the clerks.
The New Holland Horse Show on Saturday at Storb Field during Farmers Day features ten classes starting at 1 p.m. Entries close September 28. Committee includes Dr. P. R. Wentz and Isaac H. Snader. judges assess conformation and performance across divisions such as ponies, saddle horses, jumping, and hunter classes. Champion saddle horse honors are awarded from several classes with blended scoring.
The Young People's Department of St Stephen Reformed Church School will hold a bake sale on Saturday October 5 starting at 10 a.m. in front of the Harner Theatre. Proceeds support church youth activities.
Eight year old Daniel Plank suffered a broken collar bone after an accident at Center School. A nine year old boy on Hinkletown Road broke an arm reaching for grapes. Thieves stole a horse and harness from Henry Weaver then moved flour from Jacob Moore to Isaac Rupp’s mill. The Goodville school was dedicated with local officials speaking. Postmasters appointed at White Horse and Blue Ball. Burglary attempt at Mrs Townsley’s East Main Street home awakened by a passerby.
The New Holland Farmers Day Association prepares a ninth annual farm show with extensive premiums for exhibitors and contestants. Highlights include electric and gas displays, a Baby Parade on Thursday at 6 pm, a Mummers Parade Friday at 7 30 pm, a Horse Show starting Saturday at 1 pm, Quoit Pitching Corn Husking Harmonica contests, and Farm and Home exhibits with merchant demonstrations. James D. Porter, eighty five, died Wednesday at 5:15 am at his son Howard B. Porter's home in Leacock. He had no survivors. A Salem Reformed church member, services are set for 1:30 pm at the son's house and 2 pm at Heller's church. Interment follows in the adjacent cemetery. calling hours are Friday 7 to 9 pm.
Calvin K. Kurtz twenty six died at his parents home near Elverson after a short illness. He is survived by his parents and three sisters Elva Naomi and Ada. Funeral services will be at the family home at 1 p.m. then 2 p.m. at the Amish Mennonite Cemetery near Morgantown with burial in Mast Cemetery.
Mrs. Anna Eaby aged 84 widow of Peter R. Eby formerly of Bird in Hand died Thursday at 11 a m in the Zion Children's Home Lititz due to advanced age She was a Mennonite church member Nieces and nephews survive Funeral Saturday at 2 p m at Overly's Funeral Home Monterey burial in Stumptown Mennonite Cemetery
The Kemper Churchhouse near Murrell hosts the closing program of the singing class on Sunday afternoon September 29 at 2 o clock. Instructor S A Shottsberger leads the class after several months of sessions.
The Rev L L Legters a noted Keswick Bible teacher will headline the Terre Hill Bible Conference at the Mennonite Brethren in Christchurch from September 26 to 29 at 7 00 P M Standard Time The public is invited to attend and bring others.
Mr and Mrs Christian Zimmerman of East Earl RD 1 announce the birth of a boy named George Harold born recently at home. Mrs Zimmerman was formerly Miss Mabel Halligan.
Richard George of the Edison Hotel New York City was arrested in Newark New Jersey on larceny by trick charges over a 2758 dollar saddle horse swindle. He obtained seven horses July 29 and four more August 3 from horse dealer William Z Martin with promises of payment for polo ponies.
Miss Evelyn Rohrer Roseboro daughter of Mrs Chester E Roseboro united in marriage with Dr John M Ranck physician of Leola on September 25 at Trinity Lutheran Church. Rev Frank Ulrich officiated. The couple plans a short southern trip and home in Leola after November 1. Mrs Ranck has ten years as a local bank clerk and civic club involvement. Dr Ranck is well known in the medical field locally.
Miss Mary Heisey daughter of Mrs Alvin R Heisey 5 Charlotte street Manheim and John Zimmerman son of Wayne Zimmerman East Earl were married Saturday morning by Bishop Henry Lutz at his Mount Joy home. Attendants were Miss Mary Thomas New Danville and Paul Bowman Lancaster. The bride wore a grey gown. bridesmaid wore blue. After a trip to Washington they will live at their respective homes.
The Ladies Auxiliary of Blue Ball will host a covered dish luncheon this Friday evening at Mrs. E. M. High's home. A following business session will be conducted after the meal.
Mr. Clarence Aungst starts sophomore year at Lebanon Valley College Annville. Several families from Letort and nearby towns visit relatives and attend reunions in Ephrata and Riesterstown with extended family members.
Jim Ayres of the Harner homestead brings a curious tomato to the office. The fruit, of the meaties variety, appears almost seedless and when inverted displays fleshy projections resembling water plant leaves. The top is well formed and the plant is new to the Hamer gardens.
Vernon Good son of Mr and Mrs John Good Bareville was severely hurt when the bicycle he rode was struck by an automobile carrying Jay Hoover of Columbia and Charles Yost of this place. Good was with his brother and Franklin Ruess returning from Upper Leacock High School. He is a senior and was taken to the hospital after first aid by Dr W N Keylor Leacock. Hospital reports said his condition was fair last night.
A group of King's Daughters and friends, thirty strong, traveled from Blue Ball with stops in New Holland and Farmersville en route to Washington, D. C. They toured the Capitol, Bureau of Engraving and Pace, the Tidal Basin area, Washington Monument, and the White House, viewing the Blue Red and Green rooms and the East Room.
B Z Mellinger launches Ford sales and service in New Holland area. He has opened a sales station on West Main Street and is constructing a modern garage at Myers Avenue and West Main Street on land recently purchased from Guy Musselman. He plans to reside in New Holland soon in the former Amos Hershey residence.
