Remembering the Civil War Drafts and Patriot Daughters
Mrs. Mary A. Sutton, over eighty, sent copies of the Lancaster Weekly Express from July 1863 listing draftees for the Union army. The second draft required 8,126 from the county, with a fifty percent exemption, and many names from Earl and nearby townships appear. The July 18 issue also details Companies A, F, H, K of the 47th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Militia and the 50th Regiment P. W. M., all Lancaster men, who left Camp Curtin for Gettysburg era action. The piece notes the Patriot Daughters aiding wounded soldiers near Gettysburg and links past peril to present wartime calls for sacrifice.
