The Clarion announces three cash prizes for the best fifty word essays on How I Can Insure Safe-Seeing Conditions. First prize two dollars, second prize one fifty, third prize one. Open to anyone in the vicinity, multiple entries allowed. Rules printed on the back of the blanks.
Fire damaged straw in the cow stable on the Myer farm two miles southwest of New Holland. The tongue and groove floor saved the hay mow from burning through. Liberty Fire Company arrived with three chemical tanks and controlled the blaze with slight damage for an estimated value of 15000 dollars.
Cedar Grove Presbyterian to celebrate Home Coming Day on Sunday September 22 at 10 30 a m in the renovated church. Rev John M Buyers will preach and Rev Albert M Witwer DD district superintendent of Philadelphia Methodist church will give the address. Former Cedar Grove Sunday School member Dr Witwer will speak. Music will feature former members.
Wilford G. Stauffer named postmaster for New Holland takes office today after receiving commission on Thursday. He spends yesterday reviewing transferred property from retiring postmaster LH Snader.
John E. Hollinger as administrator sold an improved Water Street property in Goodville to Samuel M. Zimmerman for 1450 dollars. He also sold a 59 acre East Earl farm between Fetterville and Bridgeville E. C. Church to Hettie Horst for 12525 dollars per acre totaling 7469 dollars.
Mr and Mrs Charles R Keiser announce the birth of a daughter Shirley Katharine at 7 15 am Saturday at their home in the borough.
Dr Charles S Duttenhofer of Church Town is named a major in the 103d Medical Regiment. The promotion follows approval by the War Department at Washington after his governor Earle appointed him and he passed medical and physical exams. He earned his MD from Jefferson Medical College in 1920 and joined the National Guard in 1923, rising to captain in 1926.
David H. Styer trustee in bankruptcy for Samuel Plotnick sold two properties at public sale on August 24. The western half of a brick dwelling at 268 West Main Street fetched 500 dollars, subject to a 3951.59 mortgage, and the Plotnick Junk Yard on Prospect Street sold for 1010 dollars free of liens except 1935 taxes, both to Farmers National Bank and Trust Company.

The New Holland school district directors will meet next Monday night to hold their September session.
Rev D W Gerhard and Rev JM Souder exchanged pulpits across several towns. Gerhard preached in New Providence Quarryville Zeltenreich and New Holland in different services while Souder spoke at Heller's New Holland and nearby communities. A later note mentions Oliver Brubaker's loss of a valuable cow and a near fatal accident at a station involving brakeman Atlee Ney as the car narrowly missed him.
The Lancaster County Woman's Christian Temperance Union held its fifty second annual convention in Lititz at the Moravian Sunday school building. Miss A Virginia Grosh spoke. Treasurer Emma B Lauder reported 887 members. Memorial service honored Miss Louisa Weitzel. Bertha Lee Broughs spoke on Looking Forward and The Budget. Pauline Eavenson recommended changes in Branch Secretaries.
Henry Bear, ninety three, a Civil War veteran who served in two Pennsylvania regiments, died at 9 15 in the morning at his grandson Harry B. Leed’s home in Arlingtonville Sph rata. He is survived by two sisters Susan Stark and Katie Lutz both of Ephrata and a brother Alexander Bear of Lititz, nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Private services are planned at the home with public rites at 2 PM DST at Neffsville United Brethren church, interment to follow. Friends may call Friday evening.
Henry Frymyer eighty three died at his daughter Pearl Bruckart’s home in Talmage after a six week illness from heart trouble. He was a plasterer, member of Knights of the Golden Eagle Brownstown Order of Independent Americans Lancaster and United Evangelical church Browns town. Survived by children William, Jacob, Minnie, Mabel, Pearl and R. D. Bruckart. two sisters Mary Killian and Levina Steinmetz of Akron. Private funeral 2 pm Saturday from home with 2:30 pm church service at Brownstown United Evangelical Church. Interment in adjacent cemetery. Calls 7–9 pm today.
Mrs Moses Weiler age sixty three of Ephrata died at home at 6 15 p m on Wednesday from complications. Survived by husband Moses and children Mrs Henry Zimmerman Abram Weiler Moses Roland Lizzie Kate Mattie and Frances all at home. One brother John Huber and a sister Mrs Isaac Horst also survive. Funeral from home at noon Sunday with services at Weaverland Mennonite Church. Burial in adjoining cemetery.
A local column recalls a 63 and 60 pound snapper catch ten years ago at Bower's Beach, then a sleepy fishing trip at Parke Ames's boat. A New Holland House rat tale ends with a dramatic barrell trap win by the janitor Charley Good. Three Enterprise Telephone pay stations at Leola, New Holland and Blue Ball were robbed, suggesting a single thief and a penny bank habit.
The New Holland public schools reopened for the 1935 36 term with 399 initial enrollments. Supervising Principal Prof J Harvey Shue notes this may rise with late registrations. Bowmansville students Richard Sprecher Eugene Good Mark Hoshour Marguerite Kessler LaVerne Wise and Dorothy Lane attend the local high school.
Evans son of Mrs. W. R. Piersol of this borough is recuperating at Lancaster General hospital after a major operation.
Mt Tabor United Brethren Church plans a 43rd anniversary rally and homecoming on Sunday September 8 with a full schedule of services. George E Miller leads Sunday school at 9 30 a m followed by church worship at 10 30 with Rev J Allan Ranck of New Holland giving the sermon. Rev J L Smoker and Rev M V Fridinger address at 2 30 with a Christian Endeavor gathering at 6 30 and a second sermon at 7 30 by Rev E D Bressler of Lebanon. Special music by Mr and Mrs George Blough of Manheim and public invitation extended.

The local Lions will ride donkeys for a baseball game at Ephrata Park on Tuesday at 6 p m DST. The Ephrata Lions oppose the mounted rivals in a bid for victory. Spectators say the novelty provides rare amusement.
The Westminster Guild Circle of Cedar Grove Presbyterian Church will start its fall program at the home of Mrs. Daniel Rutter on Saturday September 7. Members and friends are invited. the roll call will be a verse from the Book of Joel.
The Uniform Rank of the Liberty Fire Company plans a series of benefit card parties on the second Saturday of each fall and winter month. The first is set for Saturday September 14 at the fire hall. Committee members chair MM D Good Ira G Bair Arthur Rennine er William Kochel and Sylvester Buch will run September's event.
A two story stone summerhouse on Dr J M Wenger’s farm near Center Church in Terre Hill was burned early Wednesday. Tenant farmer Isaac Adams lived alone there and woke to flames at 2 am. He suspects sparks from boiling apple butter Tuesday started the blaze. Loss estimated at 1500 dollars.
The King's Daughters will meet Tuesday evening at 7 30 at Mrs. C M Groff's residence marking the first gathering after a two month vacation.
