Landisville contractor Miller Eshleman will finish repaving Main Street this week with delays resolved. Work includes an oil coat and stone topping, plus a final finer stone layer, following state oiling specs. continued minor work expected through next week.
During a heavy storm on Wednesday evening a lightning strike touched down at Harry Good’s farm near the crossroad and Brubaker’s Drug Store site, setting grain bags ablaze until fire crews from Terre Hill and Goodville used chemicals to halt the spread. A second bolt hit the Landis Sensenig farmhouse chimney, halving it and tossing bricks onto the roof and ground. No injuries reported.
Executors of Eli Smucker estate sold a 72 acre farm along the road from Old Western School House to Hinkletown about one mile east of Voganville to David Zook for 260 per acre. Clerks were M. G. Weaver & Son and Amos H. Hershey served as auctioneer.
Mr C S Overly was chosen as vice president at a meeting last Friday night in the school building. Other officers were re elected. The executive committee discussed schools sharing tables next year. A small deficit will be defrayed by cooperating schools.
About 1200 people visited the Butter Bros Fruit Farm on Sunday. The peach orchards are heavily laden and the fruit is ripening rapidly.
Lions International District 14 C region five clubs gathered in Lancaster for a regional council meeting. Speakers Paul Esbenshade District Governor Rev George Shea E L Dengler urged unity and shared Lion work ideas. Represented clubs included New Holland Tri-Town Lancaster Millersville Marietta Paradise Ephrata Strasburg Quarryville Christiana. Carl Hirst of Christiana served as secretary treasurer.
Descendants of Francis Buckwalter held the second annual reunion at Saratoga Park in Pottstown. Nearly 450 registered with Mrs. Lidie Priest of Phoenixville directing registrations. Officers elected include Samuel Buckwalter as president and J Wilmer Buckwalter as treasurer.
Rev Charles Smith and his Uniondale Susquehanna county family visited relatives and friends at Voganville this week.
From the Clarion September 2 1882 a report notes Henry Weiles's summer house near town saved from fire with difficulty on Saturday morning. It also lists local school enrollments. Mrs Annie Barton teaches secondary grades with 58 students, R N Bowers enrolled 24 grammar pupils, Ai R Wigsler heads the high school with 35. The Davis mansion on East Main sold to Mrs Levi Brown for 5000 dollars. property later becomes Enterprise Telephone Company holdings.
A Septembers 2, 1922 Clarion item reports a severe electrical incident causing injuries and disruption in the town, with officials investigating the occupational hazard and public safety response.
A long list of social visits and guests includes Rev Dr Samuel M Roeder and wife with daughter Julia, Miss Mary of Scarsdale, and Blanche Evans of Philadelphia. The notes cover gatherings with the Styers Renninger Harnish and Musselman families, plus travels to Lititz Mt Gretna and Laurel Beach Maryland. Martha Musselman returns home after visiting Lancaster relatives.
A gasoline tank explosion at 7:45 last night destroyed a large barn on Daniel Petersheim’s farm in Weavertown west of Intercourse. Eight fire companies battled the blaze saving the house with calves lost and crops and equipment all ruined. estimated loss at 10 000 to 15 000 dollars.
Mrs Barbara Stutzman forty of near Morgantown died last Thursday from sleeping sickness after six days of symptoms including drowsiness and headaches. Private funeral held Friday at home by Dr C Howard Witmer. Survived by husband Harry and four children with parents and many siblings listed. Burial at Conestoga cemetery near Morgantown.
Miles B. Graybill son of Mr and Mrs Harry Graybill of East High Street Manheim and Elizabeth R Baker daughter of Walter Baker of Philadelphia were married Wednesday night at 7 by Rev Graybill Hershey at his Penn Township residence. The couple left for Florida to reside in Sebring after the ceremony.
The New Holland schools will reopen September 6 at 8 20 a m with enrollment by grade in assigned rooms. Principal J Allen Richards announced the schedule listing each grade and room, with teachers named, plus additional staff and a calendar of September events.
Anna Martin Weaver wife of Moses M Weaver died at their Mountville home last Saturday morning at seventy eight. She was the eldest daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth Weaver Martin and tied to Earl township New Holland Schools. Survived by husband two daughters Elizabeth and Gertrude M and son Phares M. Also two sisters and a brother. Funeral held at Weaverland with interment Tuesday. Rev Samuel T Dundore officiated.
Mrs Rebecca Reddig seventy five widow of John Reddig died at her Adamstown home at seven a m Friday after five weeks of illness She was a Muddy Creek Reformed church member Gouglersville Relief Association She is survived by two daughters Susan wife of Calvin Wagner and Hallie two stepchildren Wallace Horace Adams John DeBolt George Harry Mamie a brother Solomon Messner sister Ellen Boyer and two grandchildren Funeral services were held at nine thirty a m Tuesday from her home and Gouglersville Reformed church Burial followed in the adjoining cemetery
The New Holland Rod and Gun Club will hold its annual picnic on September 5 Labor Day at the Club's Cabin located a mile and a half north of Farmersville. A program of events is being planned.
Dr. H. V. Giviler will occupy the pulpit at the Leola M E Church on Sunday morning and will preach in the evening, delivering sermons in the Methodist Episcopal tradition.
Mrs. Alice R. Strickler aged 79 of Zion Home dies after an operation at Lancaster General Hospital. Funeral services set for Friday at 1:30 PM at Wie Funeral Parlor Schaefferstown. Interment in Schaefferstown Cemetery.
A four foot wood piece from a planing machine struck a boy in the head at a mill, fracturing his skull and killing him at Lancaster General Hospital. His sister Vera was slightly injured. the boy, a twin, survived by his twin brother Samuel and several siblings. Funeral services set for Sunday at 1 p.m. EST at his home and 2 p.m. at Pike Mennonite Church Hinkletown with interment in the adjoining cemetery.
Morris Goldstein of Mifflintown Pa conducted a sales event at the Blue Ball Hotel on August 30 selling a carload of tested cows from Mifflin and Juniata counties. He said another load would follow in a few weeks and urged readers to watch for an advertisement.
A horse wedding at Coatesville during the American Legion exposition drew thousands as Mildred Mix of Waco and Tom A. Horner of Hastings wed before Mayor Gordon. After the ceremony, Apaches from New Holland forcibly abducted the couple to a waiting car amid a staged wedding luncheon. Witnesses described the spectacle and the crowd cheered the rodeo pageant. The event supported Coatesville Hospital.
