Personal notes of Lancaster area residents over the week

Edward P. De Haven spent Wednesday in Lancaster. Several Lancaster and Ephrate residents visited town or hosted friends over the weekend, including Gockley, Gehman, Brubaker, Bair, Renninger, Styer, Lutz, Gockley, Rutt, Richwine, Groff, Overly, Mason, and Styer families. A Civil War reunion drew Comrade Israel Buir, with social visits from DeHaven siblings and others

Memorial Day Prayer Service at Trinity Lutheran Church

Memorial Day service held at Trinity Lutheran Church in compliance with President Wilson's proclamation. The service includes prayer and a brief address next Thursday morning May 30. All church members without services and the general public are invited to attend.

Memorial Day Mail Schedule At Clarion Office

Special to correspondents asks weekly letters be mailed by May 28 to reach Clarion by Tue evening or Wed morning. Memorial Day is a printer holiday. From then on weekly letters should be mailed earlier as Clarion goes to press Friday mornings due to changes in New Holland post office mail routes.

New Holland Troop Wins Flag for Liberty Loan Subscriptions

New Holland Troop No 17 earns troop flag for the greatest subscriptions per registered scout. Seventeen boys collected 233 subscriptions with all members participating and twelve earning medals for more than ten subscriptions. District Attorney S V Hosterwan applauded the effort in a May 22 1913 letter to Scout Master Townsley.

Remember The Carnival At Public School Grounds

A grand carnival is planned on Memorial Day week on the public school grounds hosted by the Junior Red Cross Society. Students have learned knitwork and Red Cross tasks to aid soldiers and others, with refreshments, sale items, amusements, and novelties for all ages.

Young Men Must Register Under Expanded Draft Law

President Wilson signed a bill extending the army draft to all men reaching 21 since the first registration on June 5, 1917. A June 5, 1918 deadline sets local board registrations daily from 7:30 to 9 p.m. No exemptions exist and noncompliance risks penalty. About 750,000 additional men are expected to be drafted. quarterly registrations may follow.

Serious Driving Accident Near Earl Township

Albert Rutter of Earl Township was thrown from a wagon when his horse bolted near the Western school house at 8:30 Thursday afternoon. He suffered a deep head wound and lost consciousness, was treated at Lancaster General Hospital, and remained unconscious until Saturday. The horse was recovered at the Graffdale Rotary. wagon damage was minimal.

The M E Church announces children day exercises for June 9 with boys girls and older folks at work preparing a pleasing programme. Further announcements will be given later.

Red Cross Drive Draws Strong Local Support

A large public Red Cross drive week promotes a goal of 100 million dollars to fund ongoing relief work. Community events include parades in Lancaster New Holland and Trinity Lutheran services with Rev Mountz and speaker W. Brown urging generous support and prayers for soldiers and civilians affected by the war.

Letter from England reveals a soldier’s childlike observations

Frank Sandre, in the Aero Squadron, writes from Finland Apr 14 to Clyde Brimmer. He describes the cold climate, old-fashioned houses, horse-drawn wagons, and working on airplanes while attending a rough military school. He mentions grandparents and acquaintances, asks about family, and longs for safe return.

Prison Break From County Jail Shocks Officials

Custodians found three cell doors open at dawn and three inmates missing. Albert Langer, a New York gunman, was serving eight months for larceny and faced a 34 year term for killing Constable Keesey. Frank Hurst, jailed for arson, had 173 years remaining. Samuel Garner faced ten similar rape charges. Hurst cracked his cell with a skeleton key, the others followed, fashioned a blanket rope, escaped over the rear wall. All were at large.

Narrow Escape Near Boro as Trolley Work Car Meets Wagon

Samuel Amble driving west of the borough met a trolley line work car and a loaded motor truck on the turnpike. The horses whirled and the wagon toppled with Amble thrown just ahead of the heavy track. He suffered slight bruises while the wagon and horse were brought to a stop near the Western school house.

Barn Destroyed by Fire in County Storm

A barn on William McGowan’s farm along the Butter Road northeast of Lancaster was struck by lightning during a county thunderstorm on Tuesday afternoon. The blaze consumed the barn and its contents including hay, arrow, and farming implements such as a new dia cultivator bought that morning. Two horses and three sheep were rescued as investigators assess a several thousand dollar loss.

Death Claims Northern End Resident in Ephrata

Obituary notes the death of Jesse Jones a lifelong Ephrata area resident aged sixty five from a paralytic stroke after four days illness. He was a shoemaker turned restaurateur for thirty years and left a widow daughter and several siblings. Funeral held at his home with burial at Mt. Zion cemetery.

Red Cross Notes Encourages Renewals and Volunteers

Memorial Day Parade and Carnival Observance

Memorial Day events in New Holland include a parade from the school grounds with the GOAR Veterans Red Cross Junior Red Cross students industrial workers and others. A program follows with a talk by Rev E A Bawden of Lancaster, patriotic songs and cemetery services, plus two baseball games Terre Hill vs New Holland Independents and a school carnival benefiting the Junior Red Cross.

Spahr Spahr and Lickey Tie in Lancaster First Reformed

Howard K. Spahr of Dover York county and Matilda E. Lickey of Terre Hill wed Tuesday at 11 in the study of the First Reformed Church Lancaster Rev W Stuart Cramer officiated with ring service Spahr recently finished training at Camp Meade and will receive a commission as Second Lieutenant Mrs Spahr completed a music course in Philadelphia Conservatory and will teach music while he serves in the country
