Winners of the American Legion school award will be presented with bronze medals on Wednesday at 2 15 p m in the auditorium in the presence of their schoolmates.
H. R. Fenninger and Wayne B. Ranch of Conestoga Post No 662 American Legion will present two school medals to Jane Evans and Leon Richwine in New Holland schools. The Bronze medals honor character and ability guiding future citizenship and manhood. Each award includes a certificate with a girl’s brooch or a boy’s lapel button.
Monday night at the New Holland Theatre offers courtesy night with one paid adult admission allowing a free accompanying guest. The feature is the comedy drama There's That Woman Again starring Melvyn Douglas and Virginia Bruce, followed by short features for a two hour program.
Mr and Mrs Ivan A Shirk announce a son born Tuesday at 1 47 AM at Lancaster General Hospital in this borough. Mr and Mrs Leroy Sensenig New Holland R 1 announce a son born Tuesday at their home. Mr and Mrs David M Martin Ephrata R 2 announce a daughter born Tuesday at their home.
The 1874 bill for compulsory school attendance failed in Pennsylvania. A 1891 measure passed but was vetoed by Governor Pattison, with fears over personal liberty and civil strife. A similar 1893 bill failed, while 1895 and 1897 advances gradually expanded requirements, culminating in 1899 extending the term to seven months. Continued on Page 3.
Harry H. Zimmerman fifty one a farmer living half a mile west of Goodville died at Lancaster General hospital at 4 20 p m from injuries after a fall while aiding a barn raising on a neighboring farm. Deputy coroner Dr Duttenhofer said the accident occurred at about 10 15 a m on Monday on Isaac C Martin’s farm.
A public card party will be held in the New Holland High School auditorium on Thursday June 1 for the benefit of the New Catholic church of New Holland. Cards begin at 8 30 p m with Bridge 500 Hasenpfeffer Pinochle Casino and Chinese Checkers offered. Two prizes per table include a door prize and a non player prize. Local store windows will display the prizes.
The New Holland Rod and Gun Club met Wednesday evening in the bank building. Reports on the May shoot show a substantial amount cleared. The group decided to hold a 50 rarger race at the June shoot. Results from the Saturday shoot are noted elsewhere in this issue.
A time change is set for Sunday at Bridgeville Evangelical Congregational Church. Sunday school starts at 9 00 and the church service at 10 00 ST.

Daniel FE Ranck 82 retired miller of 977 East King Street Lancaster died at 5 45 pm Tuesday at Lancaster General Hospital from infirmities of age. He ran Ranck's mill on Grofftown road east of Lancaster and belonged to Salem Reformed Church Heller's. Survived by six sons Daniel S Lancaster Benjamin C Cleveland Harry C Ardmore Abram C Philadelphia J Paul Lancaster Mahlon Philadelphia and three grandchildren. Funeral from 977 East King Street Friday at 2 pm with service at Heller's Reformed Church 2 30 pm. Interment in adjacent cemetery. Friends may visit Thursday 7 to 9 pm.

Ivan Lowry, organizer for Uncle Jack and His Cowboys, recalls his twins Gene and Joan two year olds who entertain at home by walking on piano keys and creating art on walls. A window escape ends with Gene safely found in a flower bed twelve feet below, smiling and ready for a repeat performance.
The New Holland Lions Club attended the State Association of Lions Clubs of Pennsylvania convention in Allentown. Paul F. Esbenshade was named to the State Governing Board. District Governors named were Irving R. Knapp George C. Hutchins and H. W. Carsten. Oil City Venango County Lions to host 1940 session. Attendance set a state record with 822 registrants.
The Earl Township School Board invites bids to furnish 100 tons of coal for the schools. Bids open Friday evening May 26 before 7 30 p m. Proposals must be in by then. The board may reject any or all bids. By order of the board George B Ranch secretary.

The 1930 class schedules a May 29 commencement in the auditorium at eight o clock DST. The program opens with Edouard Batiste’s Entree de Parade, includes a class creed, four student declamations, and awards from the Lions Club and Business and Professional Women's Club. Richard Wright presides. speakers include Luther Gehman Harold Plank Martha Haverstick and others.
A meeting of the Community League is scheduled for Friday at 7:30 PM in the Farmers Bank Building basement. J Allan Richards will head the new baseball school as part of a revised season plan. Boys not yet registered at the Clarion Office may join, with managers and coaches to be appointed and a schedule to be set for four local teams and future outside competition.
The New Holland Baby Beef Club met at president Melvin Groff's Bareville home on Tuesday evening with 35 members present. The Kauffman brothers provided guitar and banjo music, Miss Kathryn Sheaffer led singing, and refreshments followed. The next gathering is set for June 20 at C. W. Good's cottage, Lions Club Baby Beef committee chair.
Uncle Jack Mary Lou and His Cowboys return to the New Holland High School auditorium on Tuesday May 23 at 8 30 p m for the Uniform Bank of the Liberty Fire company benefit. Committee chairman Lewis Martin Ivan Lowry Harry K Weaver and William J Kochel organize the event.
The Lutheran Young People plan a 7 p.m. Sunday service at the Parish House. Margaret Ames and Jeanne Bergey lead the topic. Robant Ames will play a trombone solo.
The New Holland Young Men's Republican Club held its May meeting in the Farmers Bank building. The group passed a by laws amendment requiring finance committee approval before funds are spent. A picnic committee was named, and four new members were admitted on June 19 at the American Legion Home.
The East Branch of the Lancaster County Christian Endeavor Union will hold its spring rally Friday night at Ranch's United Brethren church near New Holland. Rev. J W Kaufman will speak. A Ranch's church vocal trio will sing. East Branch officers will be elected. Meeting starts at 8 00 p m DST.
A Thursday event at Trimts Lutheran Parsonage introduced Rev Walt Seminary Conaimences and a Bachelor of Divinity degree. A forthcoming sermon is planned and a new poster announces the next midweek gathering at the parsonage.

A note announces card parties at Churchtown on June 1 with Mrs 9 C Heringer and Miss Bess Giltitlan listed among finances committee members. Tables for bridge will be set and refreshments served. Plans mention Quarryville nearby and a future event at Tat Charette.
The Senator Class will tour the World’s Fair and New York City today and Saturday. Chaperones are J. Harvey Shue supervisory principal Miss Virginia Hoffman principal and Stewart J. Barthold faculty member. The group includes thirty five people.
