A long list of residents and visitors populate the town over the weekend. Numerous calls to relatives in Lancaster Ephrata Reading and Norristown accompany visits to Quakertown and Lititz with extended family socializing at homes and inns.
Attendance figures show total students in borough schools across grammar, secondary and preparatory divisions with lists of students present daily and teachers. The report records male and female totals, per cent attendance, and names students achieving full attendance.
Over the next two to three weeks a new two position Kellogg switchboard will replace the one position board at the Terre Hill exchange. The exchange opened just over two years ago with 65 telephones and now serves 260 subscribers with more to come. Linemen are reducing overloaded lines and new lines are being run to Goodville Bowmannville Red Run and Dry Tavern. Copper trunk lines are being installed. In four to five weeks all extra lines should be complete and the exchange should become one of the finest magneto exchanges in the country backed by capable operators. Tobacco plants stand ready for early harvest as fields show robust growth. Farmers report favorable weather and healthy stands across the region, with shipments expected to begin soon for processing and sale.
John A. Mellinger of Reading, longtime furniture dealer and Denver manufacturer, died in a mill accident at the Packerack Paper Mills. His clothing caught in a belt, he was hurled and fatally injured. his wife Mary B. Wolf, son Ralph a Lancaster dentist, daughter Susan Caruso, and Clara W. survived, with several siblings. Funeral held at J.G. Burkholder home, Ream Memorial Lutheran Church, Denver, and burial at Fairview Cemetery.
The New Holland Machine Company held its stockholders meeting last Saturday. The annual statement shows a twenty percent increase in business for the year ending April 1, 1914, over the prior year. Elected directors for three years were Weaver Musselman H K Landis P B Hess E C Diller. Auditors named include A W Snader Jason D Bair. The board then organized with A M Zimmerman as president and general manager Weaver Musselman as vice president P B Hess as secretary and treasurer. The plant runs at full time with 185 employees and the outlook remains favorable despite widespread cutbacks elsewhere.

A May 6 1914 Portland note from Encar H. Sensenich encloses a check to renew The Clarion weekly. The letter expresses appreciation for the newspaper as a homey source of news and extends a cordial greeting to the distant city.
A notice states the Woman's Christian Temperance Union will meet Tuesday at the home on Diller Avenue. The brief item is terse and lists the venue without additional agenda details.
Examinations for primary teachers and applicants open to the public begin June 6 in Lancaster and surrounding districts. Locations include Millersville May 27 and Warwick May 20, with many field dates through June 8. All candidates must pass on The Basis of Practical Teaching and show up where they plan to teach. Professional certificate exams occur August 25 and 26 at the Y M C A in Lancaster.
As warm months approach, Clarion firms announce 6 PM closing on Tuesday and Thursday from May through August. The Clarion Office will close every evening except Saturday. The Sunday school elects officers for the year including Isaac Cauller as Superintendent Joseph Erb as assistant superintendent Ethel Smith as secretary Blanche Rambo as assistant secretary Morris Smith as treasurer Dr A Zell as missionary treasurer Mary Climenson as organist Stanley Kendig as assistant organist Maria Bowers as primary superintendent Mrs Isaac Cauller as temperance superintendent Mary Climenson as missionary superintendent Kenneth Smith and Keller Mentzer as librarians The growing Sunday school invites new members to attend Sunday evening at 7 30 with a sermon on Feature Retribution by the pastor.
The annual commencement exercises will be held Thursday evening with Dr. S. C. Smucker of West Chester State Normal School delivering the address. An Lancaster orchestra will provide music. The Baccalaureate sermon is set for Sunday evening May 31 by Rev. J. G. Noss at the Reformed Church.
This week R. H. Wright, baker, installed a double divider or scaling machine and a rounder or moulding machine. The two new machines bring the total to seven in the plant and allow bread to be made without hand dough work, boosting capacity. Equipment from the American Bakers' Machine Co. of St. Louis, Missouri marks a decided improvement over the old method.
The P O S Saints of A New Holland will attend church services at Bunck's UB Church tomorrow evening. Pastor J R MacDonald will preach. A meeting will be held at the ball at 5 20 sharp. Conveyance will be provided for all.
New Holland baseball team captured its second straight win on home ground beating Fulton A C Lancaster. Kihl Warner debuted as catcher for Fulton, while Stork led New Holland with a clutch bases clearing hit and Matthews pitched well. Warner, Bowman, Leed, Erb and others posted multiple hits as New Holland totaled twenty off Kihl Warner.

Rev E R Seip preaches Mother's Day service. Women’s Missionary Society meets at L Seidel home. Alumni banquet draws many graduates. Caterer Slater serves an excellent meal.
Memorial Day notes say preparations for services are advancing smoothly and good weather is hoped. An invitation requests New Holland residents and nearby towns with cars to join the parade with decorated machines and to help haul veterans unable to walk. The committee appreciates the help and will publish the full program soon. Citizens are urged to decorate homes for a patriotic town appearance.
On Friday May 8 master smith Brown son of Mr and Mrs Harry J Brown of near Edwards School House Narvon RB D No 1 late of Jackson Street New Holland celebrated his eighth birthday. He received many beautiful post cards from New Holland friends and thanks them for their kind remembrances.
