This sixth installment traces neighborhood schools begun about 1776 and limited State funded efforts. It covers 1794 to 1834 free education acts, district elections for school directors, and strong religious opposition. The piece notes German distrust of state supervision and the term political schools.
Amos R. Eberly of New Holland R1 plans to finish planting 75 acres of potatoes this week across three farms. Known as a leading potato grower, he was named Potato King of Pennsylvania at the 1928 Harrisburg Farm Show for the top yield. He is planting 19 acres of peas this spring and will follow with late corn and possibly more potatoes.
Dr. Herbert Cooper of Lancaster spoke at the New Holland Lions Club dinner at the Legion Home. The club will sponsor the swim meet with Dr. Ellis H. Metford as chairman. At the June meeting Irwin R. Weaver named the entertainment committee. New Holland earned a $15 visitation prize and placed second for attendance, winning $5. Visitors Paul Demmy and Charles W. Haller attended.
Jason Wenger of New Holland Route 2 showed three Snow King cultivated mushrooms this week. The largest was about 3½ inches in diameter and the trio weighed just under a half pound, with typical specimens around 1½ inches.
A meeting of the New Holland Athletic Association will be held this Friday evening at 7 30 in the Legion Home. All are urged to attend.

Miss Evelyn Iona Dunwoody daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter P Dunwoody Bareville and George W Stauffer Jr son of Mr and Mrs George W Stauffer 358 Liberty St Lancaster were married at 1030 Saturday morning in the First Methodist church parsonage Warrington Va The Rev C H Cannon officiated The couple were attended by Mr and Mrs Robert B Good of Lancaster R 5 The newlyweds plan a tour of Virginia.
Communion services will be held Sunday morning May 14 at 10 30 at Bridgeville Evangelical Congregational church and at Mt Curmen 2 30. Rev J A Smith reading presiding elder will deliver the sermons. A Mother’s Day program by the Good Shepherd’s Bible Class is set for Sunday evening at 7 with Mrs Mamnmiller of Reading giving the address.
The Young Men's Republican Club of New Holland will hold a meeting Monday at 8 p m in the bank building.
The Christian Endeavor Societies of the United Brethren Church host an indoor campfire on Sunday at 6 30 PM as a Mothers tribute. The India themed program includes Indian poems songs and a talk on missionary work featuring Rev and Mrs Vere Abbey with aims to educate through a native Indian perspective.
In celebration of Mother's Day the New Holland Theatre invites every child to bring his or her mother to the show on Monday night May 15 as the theatre’s guest with paid admission. The feature is the Janet Gaynor film Young in Heart.

In New Holland two relics surface from the centennial of Washingtons inauguration. A copy of Ulster County Gazette from January 4, 1800 details Washingtons death and burial and a note about his heir. Mrs A W Snader owns both items.
Forty tobacco growers visiting Philadelphia, hosted by Noah W. Weaver and Bayuk Tobacco Co, tour the zoo. At the elephant pen the keeper waters a large animal while the group debates how much water a trunk can hold and whether the elephant prefers cold or warm water.
A Sunday School Convention for District No. 12 covering East Earl Caernarvon Townships and Terre Hill borough will take place at Bridgeville on Saturday May 13 with sessions at 130 p m and 730 p m. Rev W A Katz Rev F C Aungst will speak afternoon and Rev J A Wenner evening. The Bridgeville male quartet will perform in the evening.
Seniors of New Holland High prepare a farewell class day assembly on May 18 at 3 00 p m. CT. Three acts are directed by Miss Virginia M Hotman and Mr Stewart J Barthold with Charles Good as president in Act 1. The program explores closing events of the senior year and options for a trip or donations to the school.

New policy offers $5,000 public liability, $5,000 property damage, $5,000 bail bond, with extension to any car driven by the insured or spouse. Premiums start at $15.60 in an old reliable stock company.
A $40,000 blaze at Schaum's Auditorian near Brownstown Saturday destroyed the skating rink building. Fire companies from Ephrata to West Earl fought the flames, saving nearby Schreiner hotel and causing minor damage to adjacent structures. One monkey survived after being found in a field. several animals perished. A metal box with $50 and about $22.50 in cash disappeared.
Mrs Susanna Weaver Geizley 88 died at 8 80 a m Tuesday at her Terre Hill home. Survivors include children John Ephrata Isaac Eas Bart Tillie Bowman Kephrata Isaac Musser Mohnton R 1 Amos Fairfield Adams Co Mrs Barton Good Narvon R D and Harry at home with about thirty grandchildren and thirty three great grandchildren and three brothers Martin Weaver Terre Hill Rev John W Weaver Blue Ball Daniel Weaver Baumstown. Funeral at her Terre Hill home Saturday at 1 30 p m with 2 p m Weaverland Mennonite church service. Interment in adjoining cemetery. Friends may call at the home this Friday evening from 7 to 9 o clock.
Jacob Bender Coffroad of Makersville Berks formerly of Daron County died at Reading Philuart saloon Monday night at 11 45 after an illness of four weeks a complication of diseases He was 77 years old
The New Holland Redo and Gian Club Club will hold their May shoot at their cabin southeast of this borough on Saturday starting at 12:50 p.m. CT. It will be a 100 target event with many visiting shooters expected and refreshments on sale on the grounds.

The Ladies' Auxiliary of the Liberty Fire Company plans an entertainment for the Lititz Auxiliary at the fire hall on June 14. Committee members include Mrs. Robert Witmer Miss Mary Dissinger and Mrs. Milton Wassmann for the entertainment group and Mrs. Alger Wolfskill Miss Esther Diem Mrs. Guy Stone Mrs. Ivan Lowry and Mrs. Harry Shaub for refreshments. Twenty four members attended with one new member Loretta Harpster and one visitor Mrs. John L Kolb.
