John Alvin son of Oscar and Katie Beam died at grandparents in Muddy Creek aged 21 years 11 months 26 days from scarlet fever. private funeral at Bowmansville cemetery. The Memorial Day committee has organized a large service featuring the Citizens Band of Ephrata and the Churchtown Band. A 1 p.m. parade will include secret orders, the Y M C A, veterans, and school children, with services at Lutheran and Reformed Cemeteries including addresses singing and recitations. Citizens are urged to participate.
Last Tuesday the county conducted the election for County Superintendent of Public Instruction. Daniel Fleisher was unanimously re-elected after salary discussions kept at the current $3,000.00. Fleisher thanked the convention and pledged to raise the county's educational standards.
The Mennonite Children's Home Association held a Millersville meeting to elect officers and auditors. President Bishop Benjamin Weaver of Union Grove led the session followed by Secretary D. M. Wenger of Mechanicsburg. Trustees named were A. K. Mann Millersville H. S. Houston Salunga Benjamin Kauffman Gap and A. B. Latz Mount Joy. Auditors elected included Elmer Strichler Mount Joy Henry Umble Atglen and AM. G. Weaver New Holland.
A special eight day service begins at New Holland United Brethren Church on Sunday May 10 at 7 o clock. Miss Gipple of Lancaster will recite a program. All are welcome.
The Woman's Missionary Society of Ranch's A B Church will hold its monthly meeting at Mrs Winfield's home on Cedar Lane Saturday afternoon May 16 at 9 o'clock. Members and friends are invited to attend.
A Denver letter notes Charles S. Witwer, Beartown native and lawyer, as a 40-year-old political figure with ties to Lancaster County heritage. The piece recalls his roles in Colorado politics, his family background in East Earl and Caernarvon townships, and his Mennonite connections through Bishop Jonas Martin.

A gasoline stove left on after hours nearly caused a major blaze at the Roseboro Cash Works. R H Wright and his two sons spotted smoke from a window and quickly extinguished the fire in the glue stove. The shop sits among many frame buildings on Railroad Avenue with limited fire protection nearby.

Last Saturday on the home diamond the local baseball club opened the season with an 8 to 4 victory over the Black Front Club of Lancaster. The crowd saw a strong visitor lineup, with Ruth on the mound for the Black Fronts and Matthews debuting as the new local pitcher from Hershey. Matthews pitched well in relief, striking out six, as the locals rallied for the win.
The General Synod of the Reformed Church in the United States will convene May 12 at the First Reformed Church in Lancaster. The opening Golden Jubilee service marks the fifty first anniversary of the Synod with sermons and addresses by church leaders and visiting scholars from Germany Switzerland and the United States. A week of lectures papers and discussions follows on topics from Heidel berg Catechism to social issues education and home missions with public services and lectures scheduled through Sunday.
Communion will be held Sunday morning at 9 o'clock at Groffdale Mennonite Church. Preparatory services are scheduled on Saturdays at 2 p.m.
A series of events announced for New Holland Rothsville and nearby towns list May festivals by the Improvement Society Rip Memorial Day demonstration and athletic association events, plus July fairs by Blue Ball and other groups.
Leaf tobacco dealers await renewed demand as May is recalled for a postwar pickup in cigar trade. Weather and wartime costs slowed activity. packers report 60 percent of new crop sold at 5 to 6 cents per pound with scarce higher priced lots. growers prepare seed beds and some regions may reduce acreage by about 25 percent, replacing tobacco with potatoes.
Washington Camp No 40 of A will attend church services at Ranchs U B Church one mile east of New Holland on Sunday evening May 17. Pastor Rev J R MacDonald will deliver an address. Members meet at the church at 7 o clock.
