Killed in action son of New Holland family in World War II
The War Department reported that a son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul W. Diem of New Holland Route 2 was killed in action in Germany on April 14, four days after his twenty third birthday. He had trained as an aviation cadet before army decisions redirected him to infantry and served at camps in California Texas and Louisiana. He landed in France March 6 this year after a half hour home visit February 15 and previously worked as head dough mixer at Wright Bakery. Surviving are his parents seven siblings and his paternal grandfather Elias L. Diem of New Holland Route 2.

Mother Receives Purple Heart for Son Killed in Germany
Pfc. Samuel C. Weaver, killed in action in Germany on February 28, 1945, was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. The medal was presented to his mother, Mrs. Joseph Gunder, in the borough last week. Weaver had been overseas since December 12, 1944, and served with the 76th Infantry Division in General Patton's Third Army.
