Beets Fatal Fire Claims Life Of 81 Year Old Woman Near Mascot

Mrs Fannie Zook eighty one of Skelp Level near Mascot died six hours after a kettle of beets on an open stove ignited her clothing. Her daughter in law Mrs Amos D Zook beat out the flames but was slightly burned. Coroner ruled accidental death. She leaves husband Joel Zook and numerous children and grandchildren. Funeral held at her home and burial in Myer's cemetery near Bareville.

The Upper Leacock township high school at Leola was destroyed by fire, with water shortages hampering efforts. Estimated loss runs 125000 to 130000, while some books and furniture were saved. Julia's Wife 3 Act Play Opens Tuesday

Rehearsals for the three act comedy Julia's Wife sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary of New Holland near Coatesville raise funds for disabled veterans. Performances at the government hospital high school auditorium March 30 and 31 at 8 15 p m feature a large cast with Helene Weaver Paul Kochel Harry Irons and others plus a piano solo by Miss Missouri Varns. Baby smothering death near Landisville reported

Eleven month old John F Heisey, son of Menno and Florence Heisey of Manheim R1 near Landisville, was found smothered in his bed by his mother at 11 p m Tuesday. Dr D W Martin declared him dead. Deputy Coroner Fred Koser ruled accidental death. Parents survive with grandparents in East Petersburg and New Holland. Services set for 2 p m Saturday at home and 2:30 p m at East Petersburg Mennonite Church with interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Churches Plan Easter Services With Choirs Pageants

Eastertide activities unfold across local churches with special programs. Trinity Lutheran hosts a 7:00 pm pageant featuring a garden scene, a centurion tale, and musical selections by adult and primary departments. United Church of Brethren reports baptisms and new members, with cantata The Living Hope and sunrise service at 6:30 am, plus Easter services and Holy Communion.

Historians Plan to Honor F Melsheimer in Lancaster

Lancaster County Historical Society will host a Friday evening meeting at 307 North Duke Street Lancaster on April 2 at 7 30. The paper on Frederick Valentine Melsheimer will be read by Luther Heisey of Lancaster. Melsheimer served as Lutheran pastor in New Holland 1785 to 1789 and helped establish the local common school in December 1787. He later taught languages at Franklin College Lancaster and was elected college president in 1788. A memorial marker for Rev Melsheimer may be placed by the society this fall with New Holland cited as a fitting site. New Holland residents are urged to attend.

Safe blowers rob Goodville post office and hardware store

State Troopers report a Tuesday night explosion ripped the Goodville post office safe inside a hardware store. About 300 dollars in cash, stamps, money orders and a personal check belonging to Wm S Stroman were taken along with savings books deeds and other papers. A neighbor heard a whistle around 2 am suggesting a lookout.

Ordination Services Held at New Holland Mennonite Church

Paul Lauder of the New Holland Mennonite congregation was ordained to the Mennonite ministry in a Sunday afternoon service led by Bishop John M. Sauder with Bishops Noah H. Mack and Henry Lutz assisting. Rev. Sauder oversees the Tampa mission and will soon return there. Lauder formerly taught at New Holland High School.
