Scout Troop No. 1 of New Holland earned the Gold Star rating at a Lancaster Armory rally before about 1100 attendees. Scoutmaster Clyde H. Kauffman received the Gold Star flag, James Evans earned his Life Scout badge, and the troop band led by Weaver Hagey drew praise.
The Rubinson Department Store features Robt Wadlow's size 40 dress shoe in the window. The 8 foot 8% inch Illinois giant wore it, and the shop hosts a guessing contest using the shoe as a seed container. Fifteen closest guessers win a free pair of shoes. contest closes March 11.
A spelling bee will be held at Hinkletown school on Wednesday March 8 at 7 p m. The program includes instrumental and vocal music and two spelling classes and one general information class. Teachers are Mrs Emma Frankfort and John S Wenger.
The narrative describes a mob with firelocks demanding handbills from a committee member. An officer retrieves a handbill and its seizure leads to a whipping post display and gunfire. The town erupts with misinformation and violence while the militia conducts a brief, subdued muster. Continued on Page 3.

Edward Staley, 75, died at the home of Martin W. Diem in Gap on Thursday morning after a five week battle with complications. He was the last member of his family. Funeral services are set for Saturday at 2 p m from Esbenshade Funeral Home, 145 West Main Street, this borough. Interment will follow in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.
Daniel R. Smoker, seventy nine, died at noon Sunday at his Gap home from age infirmities. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Millwood Mennonite church. He was the son of the late Joshua and Barbara Renne Smoker and is survived by his wife Elizabeth Beiler Smoker. (Continued on Page 4).

A lamp causes a five year old girl’s dress to catch fire, rescued by her brother Clayton with minor injuries.
Miss Thelma R. Maser daughter of Mr and Mrs Jacob K Maser Bareville and Ray L Plank son of Mr and Mrs Daniel S Plank Leola were married Saturday at 2 30 PM in Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church Leola with Rev C Edwin Franke officiating. Attendants were Warren C Maser and his wife. The couple will reside at the bridegroom’s parents home Plank works with his father in plumbing and electrical business.
Ralph Witmyer son of Mr and Mrs Horace Witmyer of Ephrata married Martha Kendig daughter of Mrs Lillian Kendig of Stevens on Saturday evening at 8 80 o clock officiated by Rev Harold Minnich at his Denver home. Attendants were Miss Beatrice Palmer New Holland and Elmer Sweigart Eph rata. They will reside with the bridegroom s parents.
Nolt of Ephrata R 2 and Vera D Redcay of Ephrata R 1 wed Saturday at 7 pm in St John s Ream Memorial Lutheran in Denver. The ceremony was officiated by Rev W R Knerr and attended by Miss E May Stobler of Denver and Walter Redecay of Ephrata, brother of the bride.
Groff's Hardware reports the marriage of Copper to Stainless Steel, old and ancient metal joining a new and modern alloy. The couple reside at 112 Railroad Avenue New Holland Pa after March 3. Open invitation to visit at any time.
Trinity Lutheran church youth group will hold a regular meeting Sunday at 7 00 p m The program will feature music by the Sunday school orchestra and a topic led by Mr Gilbert Gutekunst

The March Bingo committee includes William J Kochel, Llewellyn Schnader, Addison Wenger and Roy Marks. The April social committee is Milo Yunginger, Allen O Sheaffer and Clayton Sheaffer.

Mr and Mrs Frank Sillinetter announce a daughter born at 2 a m Friday at St Josephs hospital New Holland. Mr and Mrs Daniel Stoltzfus announce a son born at 2 25 a m Thursday at St Josephs hospital Lancaster R 5.
Samuel W. Marshall chief engineer of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission spoke at the New Holland Lions Club dinner at the Legion home. He discussed the 160 mile toll highway from Middlesex Cumberland County to Irwin Westmoreland County and its impact on regional development and future national super highways.
