Father and Son Drown in Susquehanna Near Columbia
Wilfred L. Cooper and his son, Wilfred L., drowned Saturday afternoon below Buzzard Rock seven miles below Columbia in the Susquehanna. The elder Cooper, a Christiana native and BP and RR figure, and his civil engineer son from Harrisburg were in a canoe with Mrs. Cooper and daughter Anna L. awaiting reunion at Pequea. Rescue efforts included 50 PRR workers, explosives used by dynamiters, and divers planned as searches continued after the bodies remained missing. The elder Cooper’s body was recovered Tuesday morning about a quarter mile below the fall and bore marks of rock impact.
